Incident at the Underground Mine

There has been an incident at the underground mine of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Mimika Regency, Papua, on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. A tunnel in the underground training area collapsed trapping a number of employees. The Emergency Response Group and Safety Team are conducting search and rescue operations.

At this time, we cannot confirm the number of injured or trapped individuals nor whether there have been any fatalities. The rescue process is difficult and will take some time to complete.

We will release further information as it becomes available. PT Freeport Indonesia has reported this incident to government authorities, including the Mine Inspector of The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow employees and their families as we proceed with rescue efforts.
