Media Update, Big Gossan Incident

This is our latest update on events surrounding the Big Gossan Incident. We will be providing regular updates of developments.

  1. Rescue and Recovery
    • PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Rozik B. Soetjipto today arrived at the site to speak to rescuers who have been working around the clock to evacuate those trapped in the debris. He was accompanied by the Director General of Mines and Energy Thamrin Sihite. Rozik will also be visiting relatives of our deceased colleagues this afternoon as well as our injured who are being treated at the Tembagapura Hospital.
    • “The rescuers have been working around the clock for two days now and they continue to strive to reach the rest of our trapped colleagues in the shortest time possible,” said Rozik.
    • PTFI last night flew into Papua four psychologists trained in trauma counseling. They have begun working with the families who have lost their loved ones and any of the employees that are in need of assistance to cope with the situation.
    • Rescuers recovered another body from the debris at 2:50 am this morning. He has been identified as Rooy Kailuhu.

  1. Work Suspension
    • PTFI continued to suspend work at the mine site for the second day running out of respect and sympathy for our deceased and injured colleagues. This is a temporary suspension during the rescue and recovery period.
    • PTFI has also suspended its negotiation process with the PTFI Chapter of the All-Indonesian Workers in the Chemical, Energy and Mining Sectors (PUK-FSP KEP SPSI) on its Collective Labor Agreement for the period 2013-2015 for the same reason.
    • The Big Gossan tunnel collapse occurred in an area which is not influenced by mining operations.
