Freeport and Regency Government Hold Talk Show to Disseminate Mimika 2020-2024 SDGs

20 July 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and Mimika Regency Development Planning Agency Bappeda held a talk show to disseminate the Regional Action Plan (RAD) on Sustainable Development Goals (TPB/SDGs) for Mimika 2020-2024. The meeting that was presented in public discussion form took place at Hotel Cartens on Wednesday (20/7/2022) and was formally opened by Mimika Regency 3rd Assistant Secretary overseeing General Administration, Hendritte Tandiyono.

In his opening address, Hendritte Tandiyono said sustainable development goals (TPB/SDGs) are a global as well as national commitment aimed at resolving various issues.

The issues encompass food poverty, better quality of economic growth and basic services, income inequality, gender matters, access to justice, improved environmental quality, and inclusive development created through a participative planning and implementation process.

"In alignment, the Mimika regency government is committed to implementing development that is aimed at achieving the sustainable goals set forth in the vison of Mimika’s regent and vice regent and materializing them under the 2020-2024 mid-range development vision (RPJMD) of ‘bringing about a smart, safe, peaceful, and prosperous Mimika”, Hendritte said.

Realization of this commitment was initiated with issuance of Mimika Regent’s Decree number 205 of 2021 dated 10 June 2021 concerning establishment of a regional coordination team for implementation of sustainable development goals in Mimika Regency for the 2020-2024 period.

The decree follows up on the mandate under Republic of Indonesia Presidential Regulation number 59 of 2017 concerning implementing achievement of sustainable development goals and is part of Mimika Regency’s 2020-2024 RPJMD. “Similarly, engagement of non-government actors is in line with the principle of ‘no one left behind,’ which is equally valid for the two parties concerned, the benefits recipients as well as development implementors,” he said.

He divulged the activity was also to call for multi-party collaboration, in particular with non-government actors, towards, first, informing participants about Mimika Regency’s sustainable development goals action plan (RAD-TPB) for the 2020-2024 period.

By being informed of, and understanding the action plan, all entities concerned are enabled to plan and carry out their respective roles in contributing to community development in Mimika Regency.

Second, setting examples through past, existing or future contributions made by sustainable development actors in Mimika regency, specifically in relation to efforts to eliminate extreme poverty. On this occasion, PTFI and YPMAK are called upon to encourage participation from other non-government development actors.

Third, affording wider opportunity for multiple entities to take part in collaboration over activities related to achievement of sustainable development goals in Mimika Regency. Fourth, identifying more indicators to list under and add to Mimika regency’s action plan on sustainable development goals.

Bappeda Secretary Yoseph Manggasa divulged so far only YPMAK and PTFI have been accommodated, but other businesses and non-government actors are expected to participate, in the hope that all will report their activity program implementation aimed at achieving SDGs, for final compilation of a comprehensive exposition to be submitted to the national secretariat.

Another objective is involving other entities such as religious leaders, educational institutions, and so on, towards expanding the commitment. “SDGs indicators are clear in that we will follow up with seeking confirmation from these entities on which indicators they are engaged in out of the 17 goals. For instance, the company UT is apparently offering scholarships, and that comes under goal number 4, namely quality education,” Yoseph divulged.

He continued, development is not solely the responsibility of government, but such responsibility must be shared by all components, whether businesses, individuals, and all layers of the community. “We expect the SDGs to provide a receptacle for recording the contributions made, or roles played, by each sector in endeavoring to participate in the development and SDGs achievement process,” he said.

Next, PTFI Community Affairs Technical Advisor Arnold Kayame on behalf of PTFI management averred the company welcomes the RAD prepared by the local government. "This offers a good momentum for development in Mimika to be well integrated by the public as well as private sectors. We have been making contributions from the outset, and as you may know we have been operating here for around 50 years while carrying out social programs,” he said.

Arnold believes this offers the best opportunity for review towards adjusting to new regulations on SDGs. "On Freeport’s part, we are prepared for a review of all that Freeport has accomplished to date, for the government to record,” he stated.

For the record, Freeport has been addressing 16 of the 17 SDGs, as they are in alignment with the PTFI business. And out of the 167 indicators, PTFI has addressed 69 existing indicators. “This means Freeport has been able to make contributions for the local government and may be put on record as having participated in the development process in Mimika," he said.

Managing partner Kemal Soeriawidjaja said Freeport has assisted in the SDGs achievement process. Freeport has helped to build the process, for instance by advising on which steps Bappeda should take, such as issuing the decree. "Freeport has assisted with these processes, such as through facilitating meetings like this one, and bringing in consultants who can offer Bappeda wider perspectives,” Kemal said.

He said currently much progress has been achieved in the process, with issuance of a decree (SK). The added value from this SK is clearly obvious, in that in addition to government, participation by non-government elements is required. “SDGs achievement is an inclusive matter, and that is clear in the SK. There is now even a secretariat devoted to SDGs. Only Mimika has an RAD action plan in place, and there is even a 2021 edition," he disclosed.
