Freeport Gets Permit to Export 2 million Tons of Copper Concentrate

27 April 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) announced it has obtained permit to export copper concentrate for a one-year period. The permit is effective from March 2022 to March 2023 for a total volume of 2 million tons.

PT Freeport Indonesia Vice President of Corporate Communications Riza Pratama welcomed the government’s issuance of a copper concentrate export permit valid for a year, despite a production situation amid the Covid-19 pandemic. "This year the export permit is valid for 2 million tons of concentrate. Production could continue throughout Covid thanks to our working hard together, and we were able to meet our target, and even surpass it,” he said when reached in Jakarta on Tuesday (26/4/2022).

Riza said PTFI’s current copper concentrate production rate stands at 3 million tons per year. Out of this total volume, 2 million tons are designated for export, with 1 million tons to be delivered to the domestic smelter in Gresik, East Java operated by PT Smelting.

The volume allotted under this one-year export permit is the same as the one in 2021 effective from 15 March 2021 to 15 March 2022, with the company allotted 2 million tons of concentrate for export. "Our total production is 3 million tons of concentrate, of which 1 million tons have been delivered to PT Smelting’s domestic smelter,” he disclosed. He further revealed the company’s gold production target for this year is 1.6 million ounces, or up from the previous figure of just 1.3 million ounces in 2021.
