MIND ID, Freeport, and Antam Will Form a Consortium for Accelerating Papua's Development

29 August 2023

Mining companies have stated that they will assist in accelerating the development of Papua. This is because development in Papua depends not only on the government but also requires the strategic role of companies operating in the Papua region. The acceleration of development and welfare in Papua can be achieved through investments, job creation, and sustainable development that can have a long-term positive impact on the local communities.

According to the Special Staff to the Vice President, Masykuri Abdillah, with strong collaboration between the government and the private sector, development in Papua is expected to be effectively accelerated to achieve higher welfare goals. The companies currently operating in Papua include PT MIND ID, PT Freeport Indonesia, and PT Aneka Tambang (PT Antam).

"The acceleration of Papua's development is carried out by involving religious figures in Papua, especially church leaders. To that end, I am coordinating the governance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) from companies in Papua. The goal is for the development acceleration in Papua to involve companies in the region. Sometimes, the state budget may not be sufficient when there are urgent programs to be carried out," said Masykuri, as quoted from the written statement on Tuesday, August 29, 2023.

Director-Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development & Community Relations at PT Freeport Indonesia, Claus Oscar Ronald Wamafma, stated that Freeport has long been assisting the people of Papua, particularly in basic needs such as health, education, economy, infrastructure, and institutional strengthening. Therefore, PT Freeport will continue to be open and committed to assisting the people of Papua so that the agenda for accelerating development carried out by the central government can proceed smoothly.

Furthermore, the Vice President of Environment & Social Performance in the Mining Industry (MIND ID), Binahidra Logiardi, also revealed that their company's social responsibility was initially focused only on its immediate vicinity. However, MIND ID is determined to assist the people of Papua in other areas of the region, even though they are not MIND ID's priority zones.

Echoing the sentiments of the two aforementioned companies, Human Capital, CSR, & Finance Vice President of PT Antam Tbk, Koko Susetio, also affirmed that PT Antam will continue to contribute to Papua's development through its CSR programs.

Responding to these various commitments, Masykuri emphasized the significance of company involvement in contributing to Papua's acceleration of development across the entire region.

He also added that the roles of religious and community leaders are crucial, especially in distributing the company's CSR programs throughout all corners of Papua. "I have received suggestions from the meeting participants to establish a consortium of companies in Papua to contribute to the acceleration of development in Papua," he said.
