07 February 2023

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin visited the smelter construction project owned by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) located in the Java Integrated and Industrial Ports Estate (JIIPE) Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gresik, Tuesday (2/7).

Ma’ruf stated the smelter project that he visited will be the largest in the world and is capable of producing as many as 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate per year. “This is the pride of Indonesia and this Freeport smelter is the largest smelter in the world and eventually, when it is operational, will produce 1.7 million copper concentrate per year,” stated Ma’ruf in a press statement after the visit.

He stated, the smelter is targeted to be able to operate by May 2024, but he feels optimistic that it can be operational earlier than expected because of faster development progress. “Ahead, maybe earlier than we expect, I am optimistic because the development is proceeding continuously and uninterrupted,” thus stated Ma’ruf.

Ma’ruf mentioned once it is operational this smelter will also be capable of creating job opportunities for 200.000 people. Therefore, he advised the Administration of the East Java Province to prepare skilled workers by conducting training according to the subsequent needs of the smelter.

Previously, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the government would stop the export of copper in its raw form as of the year 2023. He claimed that Indonesia is ready to implement downstream in the copper industry because some smelters, which are under construction, will shortly be finished.  “Yesterday I checked, the Freeport smelter and the one that is located in West Nusa Tenggara are already over 50% completed; Freeport’s already 51%, so we dare to stop,” thus stated Jokowi at the ‘Mandiri Investment Forum’ event, Wednesday (2/1).

Jokowi stated, stopping exports of raw commodities should not just stop at nickel and bauxite as he previously announced. He underlined that the government would continue industry downstream of raw commodities, despite being protested by many countries.“Because it is exactly this that will leapfrog a developing nation to become a developed nation, especially/let alone ours. Don’t think of our country (ever) becoming a developed nation, if we are terrified of downstream the raw commodities in our country,” thus stated Jokowi.
