03 September 2023

The Entrepreneurship Training and Declaration of Fair Elections event, organized by the Central Management of the Indonesian Catholic Student Association (PMKRI) Sanctus Thomas Aquinas, took place in Sorong Regency from Wednesday to Saturday, August 30 to September 2, 2023.

Herianto Ebong, the Central Management of PMKRI, stated the entrepreneurship training aims to invoke an entrepreneurial spirit and new thinking in young people, encouraging them to cultivate an interest and courage to start their entrepreneurial ventures at a young age. The program also focuses on enhancing the capacity and compensation of aspiring entrepreneurs and improving the ecosystem for youth entrepreneurship development.

It is important to note that this event featured competent speakers in the field of entrepreneurship development, including representatives from the Southwest Papua Provincial Government through the Governor's Expert Staff and the Cooperative and Small and Medium Enterprises Agency, as well as representatives from Bank Papua's Aimas branch, who provided insights into credit marketing and credit analyst roles. Also, entrepreneurs from Papua, Senator Mamberob Yosephus Rumakiek S.Si, M.Kesos, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM) participants from Sorong Regency shared their experiences. PT Freeport Indonesia, a globally renowned mining company, also participated by providing insights during this entrepreneurship training event.

Arland Suruan, a representative of PT Freeport Indonesia's management, presented information about PT Freeport Indonesia's existence and its local community development programs.

One part of this local community development program focuses on fostering entrepreneurship within the local community, especially among the two main indigenous tribes, Amungme and Kamoro, and five other related tribes, as well as the broader Papua community.

When discussing efforts to cultivate interest and talent in entrepreneurship, particularly among the native Papuans, there are certainly challenges. However, according to Arland Suruan, based on PT Freeport Indonesia's success in Timika, these challenges are not insurmountable if we maintain good intentions and a commitment to continually implement efforts and processes to develop entrepreneurship within the Papuan community.

To date, PT Freeport Indonesia continues its development and mentoring programs for local entrepreneurs, particularly in Timika, Papua. PT Freeport Indonesia's commitment to this cause is demonstrated by providing $100 million in social investment funds annually until 2041.

Arland Suruan concluded the PT Freeport Indonesia sharing session by emphasizing that nothing is impossible for the native Papuans. This event took place on Friday, September 1, 2023, at the LPTQ Building on Jl. Buncis, Aimas District, Sorong Regency.
