10 Mimika Healthcare Workers Participate in International Neurovascular Conference

11 May 2024

Mimika, 11 Mei 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) supported professional healthcare workers in Mimika Regency to expand their knowledge and insight of neurovascular disorders and the latest technologies  used in the treatment of such disorders,  and to develop better and more effective neurovascular interventions in Mimika Regency as well as Papua.

“This support is in implementation of PTFI social investment in the area of healthcare.  We collaborated with Mimika Regency Health Office  and dispatched 10 healthcare workers to attend the Bali International Neurovascular Intervention Conference (BLINC) held in Bali from 25 to 27 April,” PTFI Community Health Development Manager Daniel Perwira said in Mimika, on Saturday.

The conference is the first of its kind to be held in Indonesia. 10 speakers from the United States of America, Europe and Asia were in attendance. Around 370 doctors and nurses from Indonesia and other countries  participated in this event and shared information and the latest knowledge on neurovascular interventions. The term neurovascular refers to disorders and conditions affecting blood supply to the brain or spinal cord, including strokes.

The Mimika healthcare workers attending this conference included Mimika Regency Health Office Head Reynold Ubra and staff; RSMM Hospital Director dr Joni Tandisau; RS Waa Banti Hospital Director dr. Anita Sanjaya; RSUD Hospital specialist dr. Shinta Florentia; dr. Ririn Ibrahim from Puskesmas Timika (Timika Community Health Center); and PSC 119 Person in Charge, dr. Ferdynand.

Mimika Regency Health Office Head Reynold Ubra said PTFI support for medical workers is highly significant towards developing their knowledge and insight. According to the 2022 Mimika Community Health Survey there has been an increase in occurrence of non-infectious disorders among  the population of Mimika, such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol levels. These disorders are strongly related to neurovascular and cardiovascular diseases.

“Participation in the conference will assist them to gain better and the latest insights into neurovascular research and technology, and to build networks with related specialists at the national and global levels,” he said.

Reynold said the healthcare workers participated in various workshops and discussion panels on a range of important topics for developing their insights, including for endovascular therapy in the treatment of strokes, application of new technologies, and intraoperative monitoring.

BLINC Chief Medical Officer (CMO) dr. Affan Priyambodo said strokes are the main cause of disabilities in Indonesia  and among the biggest cause of deaths. Recent data indicate there are close to two million deaths attributable to strokes, but only around 2,500 – 3,000 cases are properly treated.

“This BLINC event in inviting national and international speakers to carry out transfer of technology and science serves to increase the competencies and capabilities of doctors and nurses in Indonesia,” Affan said.
