Gresik, 16 June 2024 – On Saturday (15/6) PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Deputy President Director Jenpino Ngabdi welcomed Acting Governor of Central Papua Province Ribka Haluk, who had arrived at the PTFI smelter located in the JIIPE area in Gresik, East Java for a working visit.
“We wished to personally see the Freeport Indonesia Smelter that begins operating this June,” Ribka began his address to PTFI management.
He said it was a point of pride for Papuans that copper concentrate from Tembagapura in Central Papua was being shipped to Gresik Regency in East Java, in support of the downstreaming program established by the government.
“The Freeport mining area in Timika is located in Central Papua Province, so how should we build cooperation and collaboration towards resolving issues such as unemployment, extreme poverty, and mitigation of stunting,” said Ribka, who had arrived together with Central Papua Province government officials.
Jenpino thanked the government of Central Papua Province for their visit and support. “We are committed to continue working together with the government of Central Papua Province to develop a safe and beneficial mining industry for the people of Papua and all entities, so as to provide maximum value addition for Indonesia,” he stated.
Ribka and his entourage toured the PTFI smelter site and observed up close various vital areas and facilities there, such as the Jetty (Port), the smelter operating area, and the . Oxygen Unit, the Sulfuric Acid Unit, the Desalination Unit, and the Effluents and Waste Water Treatment Plant. This tour served to provide an overview of the PTFI smelter’s readiness as commencement of operation draws near.
The PTFI smelter is currently undergoing the commissioning process, which consists of trials and tests to ensure all equipment and systems designed are installed and running properly, in order to achieve substantial completion of the smelter project.
The PTFI smelter is scheduled to begin operating in June 2024, and will the enter the production stage in August, after which production will ramp up until full capacity is reached by the end of December 2024.
This smelter which is PTFI’s second will be able to refine copper concentrate at a production capacity of 1.7 million tons. In addition to copper cathode, the smelter will also produce anode slime that will be refined in the Precious Metals Refinery (PMR) to yield pure gold and silver bullion, and Platinum Group Metals (PGM).
As of the end of May 2024, PTFI had invested 3.67 billion US dollars, or approximately Rp 58 trillion, to build the copper smelter with a single line design that is the biggest in the world.
