Timika, July 13, 2025 – Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob together with Director & EVP Sustainable Development of PT Freeport Indonesia Claus Wamafma launched a clean water distribution program from the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) or Clean Water Processing Facility located in Kuala Kencana.
"This is an extraordinary collaboration between us, the government, and PTFI, so that now the people of Mimika can feel the positive impact of this clean water program," said Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob in his speech during the launch of the clean water distribution program at SP2 Lane 5 Mimika, Friday, July 12, 2025.
The Regent expressed appreciation to PTFI for supporting the government in various programs, especially the clean water program in Mimika. "I thank PT Freeport Indonesia for working together with the government in implementing this clean water program in Mimika. I hope and request continued support so that the source (WTP) continues to operate, so that distribution also runs smoothly," he said.
The Clean Water Processing Facility for the Mimika community is an implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mimika Regency and PTFI in 2013. Based on the MoU, PTFI is responsible for building clean water processing infrastructure (WTP), while Mimika Regency is responsible for distributing clean water to the community.
PTFI completed construction of the Clean Water Processing Facility in 2019 with a PTFI investment of approximately 10 million US dollars or equivalent to Rp150 billion. PTFI then handed over the facility to Mimika Regency in October 2023. This facility has a capacity of 2 clean water processing units, 2 storage tanks with a total capacity of 2.5 million liters, and 4 pump units capable of supplying 200 liters of clean water per second. Meanwhile, the clean water distribution pipeline network built by Mimika Regency has currently reached approximately 13,000 homes. Of this number, approximately 8,000 homes are already actively supplied with clean water sourced from the clean water processing facility in Kuala Kencana.
The Regent said that going forward, they target this clean water service to reach 50,000 homes by 2027, with potential beneficiaries of 250,000 residents of Timika and surrounding areas.
Director & EVP Sustainable Development PTFI Claus Wamafma in his speech stated that Mimika Regency is experiencing very rapid growth. One important achievement is meeting the community's basic need for clean water.
"Today we witness how the hard work of Mimika Regency brings water to people's doorsteps, and people can directly get water of good quality," said Claus.
Claus said consuming clean water is very important. This is part of preparing for children's growth and children's health quality. Good water standards can strengthen immunity and improve the health of Mimika's new generation. "This is mandatory for us to do (consume clean water), so that we have a healthy, stronger, and smarter successor generation," he said.
The launch of this program took place at SP 2 Lane 5 Mimika and was connected via live streaming with several points at other locations such as SP3, Rambutan Street, Kelapa Dua Area, Beringin Area, and Sam Ratulangi Street, which together opened water taps as a sign of flowing clean water. Also witnessing were Deputy Regent of Mimika Emanuel Kemong, Acting Regional Secretary Petrus Yumte, Mimika Forkompinda, Mimika Regional Government Agency Leaders, VP Government Relations PTFI Lenny Josephina, VP SRM PTFI Arief Nasuha, and community representatives from Timika Jaya Village at SP 2 Lane 5.
On this occasion, a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) was also signed between PTFI and Mimika Regency regarding support from PTFI for the management and operation of the Kuala Kencana Clean Water Processing Facility until 2026.
