(Tembagapura) – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) provided free eye health care services for the community of Kampung Waa Banti, in Tembagapura District, that is a village located in the PTFI highland area, on Monday-Tuesday (25—26/3). This activity was part of PTFI 57th anniversary celebrations carrying the theme of "Berkarya untuk Indonesia" (Working to Serve Indonesia).
Claus Wamafma, PTFI Director & EVP Sustainable Development says this initiative forms part of the company’s commitment to reduce eye health issues among communities near the company’s mining site, and at the same time support development of Mimika Regency through the healthy eye program.
“We called on various entities to participate in collaborating and contributing to serve the communities. Our hope is that such social action will benefit the communities and encourage health empowerment in Mimika Regency through this eye health program,” he said.
Collaboration was initiated with the Mimika Regency government and the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation YPMAK, with support provided by Media Group by way of PT Pangan Sari Utama (PSU), and Perdami (Indonesian Eye Specialists Association).
Subsequently 77 individuals participated in a two-day activity for eye examinations. This healthcare activity included General Eye Health Tests, Eye Refraction and Eye Pressure Tests, Distribution of Free Eyeglasses, and Screening for Cataracts.
In addition to Kampung Waa Banti, this series of eye health care services conducted with the slogan "Mataku Duniaku" (My Eyes My World) will be held from 27—28 March in several villages such as Mapurujaya, Wangirja (SP9), Utikini Baru (SP12) Mioko, Aikawapuka, Wumuka and Kapiraya as well as in the city of Timika.
One patient from Kampung Waa Banti, Yesaya Dibitau (50) who came with a long-standing eye disorder said he had suffered eye injury from a wood splinter while working in his garden. “When I heard about this eye health care service through an announcement made in church, I decided to come and have my eyes examined so as to improve my eyesight. Thank you, Freeport Indonesia and doctors,” Yesaya uttered.
In addition to providing free eye health examinations, PTFI and its partners will be offering free cataract surgeries for community members who need them as detected in the cataract screening process. The cataract surgeries will be performed in Rumah Sakit Mitra Masyarakat hospital when the Community Service activities reach their climax on 5 April.
“Hopefully this free eye health care service will be a good beginning to reinforcing the community’s eye health and to boosting their quality of life," Claus said.
