Timika – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) young employees from the company’s Community Affairs (CA) Division organized an educational and motivational activity on health and sanitation and hygiene for schoolchildren in the villages of Fanamo, Omawita and Otakwa, in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, from 16 April through 18 April.

“The three villages are located in the district of Mimika Timur Jauh. We travelled to these villages aboard motor boats for more than three hours from Timika to arrive at our destination. For three days we engaged in this activity with local children, and  stayed  in the Diocese house, which is the basecamp for the Community Affairs team there,” the activity’s Committee Leader Mario Takati recounted.

Mario who is a native Kamoro said the activity themed “Bonding and Caring” was aimed at instilling enthusiasm for learning among the children, and teaching them about health as it relates  to the dengue and malaria diseases,  as well as imparting awareness of   the importance of maintaining a clean school environment.

This activity was attended by 251 schoolchildren from the elementary schools SD YPPK Manasari, SD Negeri Omauga, and SD YPPK Otakwa, as well as the middle school SMP Negeri Omauga.

During this activity, the team also distributed supplemental foods, school supplies, learning aids, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other sanitation and hygiene items. Sports equipment such as footballs, volley balls, and nets were also distributed, along with music instruments such as guitars and ukuleles.

Mario said throughout their visit, the employees shared their experience working in PTFI, and gave out tips on how to study effectively, as well as information on maintaining personal hygiene,  together with PTFI’s  Community Health Development (CHD) Division.

“Through this program, we hope children in Mimika’s coastal villages will remain motivated to learn and strive to realize their ambitions and to build a better future for their village,” Mario said.

A teacher from SD YPPK Manasari, Yansen Nua said the visit by the PTFI team was highly beneficial for the children, primarily in educating them about health and sanitation and hygiene.

“Thanks to the PTFI team for the education provided that will serve to increase the children’s knowledge and remind them of the importance of health and  hygiene. They will become healthier children and will be  a boon for us in the villages,” he  said.

PTFI Director & EVP, Sustainable Development, Claus Wamafma stated his support for the activity and said there were plans to continue this activity in other places.

“By personally visiting villages and meeting with children, PTFI young employees will be gaining new and valuable experience. It is hoped such interaction will inspire them to continue to endeavor to bring about benefits for the communities in the vicinity of the PTFI operating area,” he said.
