Freeport Repairs Roads & Bridges Damaged By Floods in Kampung Waa Banti

13 June 2024

(TEMBAGAPURA) 13 June 2024 - Freeport Indonesia deployed a special team to repair roads and bridges that were damaged as a result of high rainfall, floods and landslips occurring from 1 through 3 June, in the village of Kampung Waa Banti, Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency.

“We moved quickly to deploy heavy equipment consisting of 2 Excavators, 4 Articulate Dump Trucks, 1 Wheel Loader, and 1 Grader, along with a crew to carry out repair work on roads, embankments, river normalization, and the Agwamage bridge abutment and wing retaining walls, which were beginning to be eroded by the river current,” PTFI Senior Vice President for Community Development,  Nathan Kum.

Floods lasting for three days had damaged access roads, river embankments, and bridges, and there were landslips at six points along  the stretch of road heading west in the direction of Banti, consequently affecting transportation for residents and  disrupting mobility for Rumah Sakit hospital health workers.  The Kampung Waa Banti area is located at a distance of 5 km from the PTFI operating are in Tembagapura.

Nathan said the damaged roads and bridge provided the only overland access connecting Timika, Tembagapura, to the villages of Kampung Banti, Kampung Opitawak, and Kampung Aroanop. As such, immediate repair of the roads and bridges was deemed highly urgent.

“Our priority was reopening the access roads, which are used on a daily basis by residents, and ensuring smooth transportation for health workers from Tembagapura to RS Banti hospital,” Nathan added.

The village head in Banti 2, Demianus Natkime said residents’ mobility was disrupted as a result of floods and landslips. “On behalf of the communities of the three villages, I would like to thank Freeport for moving swiftly to assist with repairs on the main access roads to the villages of Waa Banti. Hopefully the weather will return to normal so that no more disasters occur,” he said.

Repair work on roads and bridges to assist residents of Kampung Waa Banti was carried out by PTFI with assistance from TNI and the Police to monitor the areas impacted by floods and landslips, until the weather improves and road access returns to normal to allow for safe traveling.
