Timika – Historically, in the mining industry it is usually men who are predominantly at the forefront of operations. But as more generations of women succeed in breaking barriers and overcoming hurdles, new jobs are opening up for them in this industry.
This is a story about the formidable, indomitable women who are at the forefront of PTFI’s mining operation, in the role of modern-day Kartinis (national heroine and pioneer of women’s rights).
Rode Yetmince Florence Ajomi is familiarly known as Roce by coworkers. She majored in Industrial Engineering at Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta. In her capacity of Grasberg Earthworks Manager, she is charged with the task of ensuring administrative duties are conducted smoothly in support of all crews working in the field, the objective being to minimize all hindrances affecting their performance.
Roce began her career at the age of 21 one year ago, while making good use of each opportunity to acquire experience and a better grasp of PT Freeport Indonesia’s main priorities, namely the safety and health of all employees.
In interacting with crews on various occasions, Roce consistently applies a personal approach to encourage honest and unreserved discussion. She believes health and safety are the mutual responsibility of management and employees.
By affording opportunities to hold open and straightforward dialog with crews, Roce and her team are confident about offering guidance to the crews in taking the necessary steps to reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries occurring, thereby bringing the company closer to fulfilling the goal of safe and sustainable production.
Then there is Danis Widowati. She studied Mine Engineering at Bandung Institute of Technology, Danis began her professional career when she joined PTFI under the company’s Fresh Graduate Program. She is currently involved with a Hydrology team who play a role in mitigating acid rock drainage and managing water quality from the open pit.
Danis is well aware that as a woman working in the mining industry, she is among the minority in an environment dominated by men. But here is Danis, working at one of the world’s biggest mining companies.
Despite being the only woman in her team, her ideas, opinions, perspectives, and personality are respected. Her teammates treat Danis with courtesy, and do not discriminate her for being a woman. The strong and supportive relations she has with her coworkers lends to her job being more enjoyable.
There is also Sari Widya Apriyani, who studied Geodetic Engineering at Bandung Institute of Technology. As Chief Engineer for Database Integration & Reporting System, Sari is responsible for setting up models or mapping out and carrying out all activities relating to integration of data from various sources into an organized and cohesive presentation, as needed in the underground mining operation.
Sari began her professional career under the PTFI Fresh Graduate Program. She was at one time a member of a surveyor team, preparing reports to reflect accurate and detailed information on surveys conducted in the underground mining operation.
Sari is confident gender difference is no obstacle to her achieving a successful career. She believes success is more often contingent on good teamwork, and on collaborating with, and assisting others while affording opportunities for learning and developing together, rather than being oriented merely towards producing favorable results.
