Mimika Training Center Athletes Earn Four Medals at 84th Singapore Open

Timika – Papuan athletes from the Decentralized National Athletics Training Center in Mimika earned four medals while competing in the 84th Singapore Open Track & Field Championships held in Singapore Sports Hub, on 18-19 April. 

Mergina Asyerem sucessfully won a gold medal in the women’s 400 meter dash, with a time of 25.35 seconds. Another gold medal was won by Vinsensia Awuwet Amjaram, for the women’s long jump competition with a distance of 5.75 meters. Meanwhile, in the discus throw competition, Eventinus Gebze registered a throw distance of 61.76 meters, thereby earning him third place to bring home a bronze medal.    

“Congratulations to all athletes who have successfully garnered accomplishments at this international tournament. Freeport Indonesia is proud and deeply appreciates these accomplishments. PTFI will continue to support Indonesian athletes training at the Papua Athletics Center in -Mimika Sports Complex. Once again, congratulations, and please continue to bring glory for Indonesia and Papua,” PTFI Director & Executive Vice President (EVP), Sustainable Development, Claus Wamafma  exhorted. 

The Decentralized National Athletics Training Center in Mimika dispatched six athletes to participate in this tournament. They included Eventinus Gebze for the discus throw and javelin throw competitions; Silfanus Ndiken in javelin throw; Paustinus Obed Basik Basik in the men’s 100 meter dash;  Mandala Putra Rumaikewi in the men’s 400 meter dash; Mergina Asyerem in the 200 meter dash; and Vinsensia Awuwet Amjaram for the long jump competition.  

Silfanus Ndiken was close to earning a medal in the javelin throw competition, but he had to be satisfied with placing fourth with a throw distance of  60.47 meters, as did Mandala Putra Rumaikewi who competed in the men’s 400 meter dash, registering a time of 49.82 seconds. Meanwhile, sprinter Paustinus Obed Basik Basik completed the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.31 seconds, placing him in 15th position.   

Chairman of All Indonesia Athletics Association Central Executive Board (PB PASI), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan conveyed appreciation and pride for the achievements made by athletes from the , Decentralized National Athletics Training Center in Mimika, in particular as this was their first experience in participating in an international competition.   

"These accomplishments demonstrate the hard work, dedication, and high level of commitment by our athletes during the competitions in Singapore. These successful feats will serve to motivate and inspire our young athletes to continue to strive to develop further and attain even more accomplishments at international arenas,” Luhut said.  

The Mimika Decentralized National Athletics Training Center Program is a collaboration between PB PASI and PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), aimed at increasing the performance of Papuan athletes and affording opportunities for them to hone their talents.  

Under this collaborative program, PTFI provides facilities for athletes to undergo training in Mimika Sports Complex (MSC). PTFI built MSC, which is equipped with an athletics arena covering an area of 1,455 m2 and a gym to complement intensive training by athletes preparing to participate in competitions at the national as well as international levels.

Mergina Asyerem successfully won the gold medal in the women’s 400 meter dash competition, with a time of 56.30 seconds. 

Eventinus Gebze succeeded in making a  61.76 meter discus throw and earning third place in the finals, to bring home a bronze medal.

A gold medal was won by Vinsensia Awuwet in the women’s long jump competition with a distance of 5.75 meters.

Mergina Asyerem earned a silver medal in the women’s 200 meter dash with a time of 25.35 seconds.
