PTFI and Mimika Health Office Continue Providing Healthcare Services at the Paumako Clinic

16 February 2024

Timika -  Health issues in some parts of Mimika Regency, in particular the malaria disease, prompted  PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) by way of its  Community Health Development (CHD) division to support and assist the local government’s health programs. Collaborating with Mimika Regency Health Office, PTFI has initiated various actions to suppress the incidence rate of malaria among the population.

In Mimika Timur District, Mimika Regency, there is a medical clinic built and established by PTFI that has been serving  nearby communities  since around 1992. PTFI also provides healthcare workers who work alongside healthcare officers from Mimila Regency Health Office.

“Company support for health development in the Paumako clinic will continue. This Freeport Indonesia  collaboration with Mimika Regency Health Office will bring substantial benefits for the communities,” Director & EVP for Sustainable Development, Claus Wamafma stated.

In June 2021 PTFI handed over the Paumako Clinic (Klinik Paumako) to the Mimika Regency government, along with  two other clinics built and established by PTFI in the Timika area, namely the SP 9 Clinic and the SP12 Clinic. This new partnership was grounded on Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 38 of 2015 concerning  Private Partnership (PPP), or collaboration between the government and business entities, which sets out the scheme for provision of public infrastructure with engagement of private entities.

According to Dr. Budiman Saragih who is the person in charge at Klinik Pemda Paumako, the Mimika Regency government by way of its Health Office assigned 10 medical workers to the clinic, to add to the 4 healthcare officers from  Freeport. “We who are assigned here serve the resident community in the Paumako area, collaborating with the healthcare officers from Freeport. Support provided by these healthcare workers  greatly assists us in treating residents at the clinic,”  Dr. Budiman said.

Klinik Paumako’s presence  since 1992 holds stories remembered by the community receiving healthcare services at the clinic. “My parent worked at the clinic from the time it began operating in 1992, and I myself regularly visit the clinic and have personally observed the Freeport Malcon team traveling around the area in a vehicle to provide health care for  residents who are unable to walk to the clinic,” Ernestina Kapan said when she was reached at Klinik Pemda Poumako on Friday  (2/2/2024).

Fatam Macaweyeau, a housewife hailing from the Kamoro tribe related her own experience receiving health care from the PTFI  team, who in the past were known as  Malaria Control (Malcon)  paramedics. “When I was treated for malaria in  the Paumako clinic, the doctor told me to come again after five days for a control checkup, but I could not make it. Freeport Malcon officers then came to my home to deliver medication,” Fatam recounted.

In addition to  furnishing assistance with healthcare workers, the PTFI team provides medicines for residents seeking treatment at the three clinics in the Timika area.
