Selected Out of Thousands of Aspirants, 127 Trainees Embark On Apprentice Training Program at Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN)

Mimika, 4 Mei 2024 - 127 trainees are joining an Apprentice Training Program at Nemangkawi Mining Institute (Institut Pertambangan Nemangkawi / IPN). They were successfully selected after taking part in stringent selection followed by 4,938 aspirants who had registered.  

"All of you in attendance here are a select group, so you must put this opportunity to best use. No one must stop midway. You must all prove you can, and are able to complete this training program,” Senior Vice President for Community Development, Nathan Kum adjured the training program participants when formally opening the Apprentice Training Program at the Multipurpose Building in Kuala Kencana Timika, Mimika, on Friday (3/5).  

Nathan said the selected participants had undergone selection consisting of psychological testing, health examinations, and administrative processing. A requirement for eligibility to participate in training was a vocational high school or general high school educational background. The 127  selected participants comprised 47 members of the Amungme Tribe, 46 from the Kamoro Tribe, 23 from the five kindred tribes, and 11 Papuans and non-Papuans.  

“The training participants are made up of 101 men and 26 women. It is IPN’s commitment to create an inclusive and diverse work environment,” Nathan said as he symbolically placed a safety helmet on a representative of the participants, to mark the opening of the program.   

He said this training program with a duration of one year consists of six months of intensive training in the institution and another six months in various PT Freeport Indonesia departments. The program covers six job disciplines, namely for Electricians, Welders, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Plant Operators, Heavy Equipment Operators, and Miners.  

The training program that has been in place since  2003 introduces a series of intensive training to produce generations of prime workers in the mining industry, In implementing the training program, IPN is supported by the  Community Affairs, Learning & Organization Development, Papuan Affairs Development departments, along with related departments in  the company itself and its contractors.  

"This program is designed to equip apprentices with in-depth practical experience and technical skills needed in order to succeed in the mining industry,” IPN General Superintendent Suzan Kambuaya said in her capacity of Program PIC.   

A training participant from the Amungme Tribe, Nani Natkime conveyed her happiness and thankfulness at being selected to follow the program. “By means of this program I will be enabled to achieve self-development, in the hopes of becoming a reliable and proven PT Freeport Indonesia worker, towards building and developing this land,”    

IPN is an educational institution established and managed by PTFI. IPN is located on 8 hectares of land inside the PTFI industrial park in Kuala Kencana. Its facilities include comfortable classrooms, a large workshop, an underground mining simulation area, simulators for operating trucks, equipment for mining operations, a library, and a pleasant and comfortable environment conducive to carrying out practical training.
