Gresik, 25 May 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) President Director Tony Wenas called at the PTFI smelter project and ascertained the PTFI Smelter located in the JIIPE area in Gresik is set and ready to begin operating in June 2024.
"Today I visited the smelter to check on completion of the PTFI Smelter Development project. We are at this time carrying out the commissioning process, which consists of testing and trials to ensure the equipment and systems that were designed have been installed properly as part of the drive for substantial completion of the smelter project. We expect the smelter to begin operating in June,” Tony stated during the visit to the smelter on Saturday (25/05).
He explained, smelter development is by way of the company’s realizing its commitment to boost value-added minerals and support the industry downstreaming initiative launched by the government.
This project to develop PTFI’s second smelter that was begun in October 2021 is designed to treat and refine copper concentrate at a copper concentrate smelting capacity of 1.7 million tons per year, making the smelter the biggest copper treatment and refining facility to be designed in the world.
The smelter is equipped with a Precious Metals Refinery, an Oxygen Unit, a Sulfuric Acid Unit, and a Desalination Unit, as well as an Effluents and Waste Water Treatment Plant, all of which will boost utilization of raw material, byproducts, and wastes to the greatest extent possible, towards achieving the highest degree of efficiency in the smelting and refining process.
Currently, 60% of PTFI’s concentrate production is exported with the remining 40% refined domestically by PT Smelting in Gresik, East Java, to produce copper cathode. However the anode slime, which contains gold and silver is still exported. Subsequently, once the second smelter begins operating, 100% of the anode slime refining process will be conducted in the country.
"Certainly, in the development of this copper smelter that is the biggest in the world with a singleline design, we encountered numerous challenges. However, the smelter project team, the contractors and subcontractors have done an excellent job. As have central government and the regional government accorded outstanding support towards ensuring PTFI completes the project on time," Tony said.
