UPN Yogyakarta Holds Talk Show With PT Freeport Indonesia President Director

04 March 2024

Yogyakarta, 4 March - "Veteran" National Development University Yogyakarta (UPNYK) held a  CEO Talk event titled “Leading With a Spirit to Defend the Nation in an Era of Change” with PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas as speaker, at the university’s Integrated Research Laboratory Primary Hall on Monday (4/3/2024).

Tony Wenas opened the CEO Talk event with a surprise for the audience. He challenged students to present five questions on any topic, not necessarily on mining. The audience responded enthusiastically and came up with diverse questions.

Questions posed by the students included tips on how to be a successful CEO, what contributions Frepport has made for Indonesia, what the company’s CSR programs are, how the concept of gender equality is practised in the workplace, and how to pursue a career in a mining company.

In responding to the question on how he achieved success as CEO of the world’s biggest mining company, Tony replied, there are four things he diligently practices, which he conveys to employees.

“Based on my personal experience, past and present, there are four things I have instilled in myself, namely honesty, discipline, focus, and earnestness. We know what honesty means, and discipline is among others about organizing our time,” Tony Wenas said.

Tony went on to offer the significance of focus in the context of performing tasks. “When people ask me what kind of business I own, I tell them I don’t have one. My focus is on working as a
Freeport employee,” he said.

Further,  earnestness is about completing assignments  and fulfiling obligations properly and in a timely manner. Not to earn praise, a bonus or a promotion.

In offering tips on achieving success, he stands by the philosophy taught by Ki Hadjar Dewantara, that is Ing Ngarso Sung Tulodo, Ing Madya Mbangun Karso, Tut Wuri Handayani (To lead by example, To Inspire and Motivate Amid One’s Own Preoccupation, To Offer Moral Support and Encouragement From Behind).

"Notwithstanding the numerous management and leadership theories offered, in leading I prefer to practice  Ki Hajar Dewantara’s philosophy," he said.

Tony explained this maxim carries deep significance. “At times we are in a position where we must pull the cart, but sometimes we are required to be in the middle laboring together with others, and at other times we have to be at the back to push the cart. So it is not just about being constantly in the forefront,” Tony Wenas conveyed.

“We are honored to have Pak Tony Wenas among us in the UPN Yogyakarta campus, as one of the best CEOs in Indonesia. This event is held as a platform for introducing practicing concepts in industry with focus on a spirit to defend the nation.” UPNYK Rector Prof. Dr. Irhas Effendi, M.Si., stated in opening the event.

This event, the Rector coninued, offers valuable opportunity for students to gain a comprehension of the role a leader plays in the managerial sector, in particular in the context of leading a business.

He voiced the hope that this CEO Talk event would inspire students to grasp the importance of leadership in facing changing times.

“Freeport Indonesia has a part in supporting education and the welfare of surrounding communities, and through this event students have the opportunity to query Pak Tony directly about how to head a company, to seek tips on how to face challenges, and what the Freeport Indonesia version of Defending the Nation is,” he said.

In addition to answering questions posed by CEO Talk participants, Tony elaborated on the sustainable mining practices conducted by the company. PTFI mines and processes ore to yield concentrate containing copper, gold and silver. As of 2023, PTFI had made investments amounting to 22.3 billion US dollars, including for development of  its underground mines.  "Freeport Indonesia contribution to the state in the form of payment of taxes, royalty, dividend and other items from 1992 through 2023 amounts to 29.3 billion US dollars,” he said.

He further informed, Freeport Indonesia’s sustainable mining practices are conducted concurrently with development for local communities consisting of the Amungme Tribe, Kamoro Tribe, and five kindred tribes as well as other Papuan peoples.

“Freeport Indonesia’s social investment came to 122 million US dollars in 2023, with focus on the education and health sectors, and with support provided in the areas of sports and culture. More than 12,000 scholarships have been awarded, primarily to Papuan students,” he disclosed.

The event was attended by 300 students. In addition to engaging in  dialog with the students, Tony presented scholarships to 4 Accomplished Papuan students.

The Rector voiced the hope that ahead, UPN Yogyakarta and PT Freeport Indonesia could together increase academic collaboration, for instance through offering expanded opportunities  for Papuan students to continue their studies in UPN Yogyakarta.
