Nabire, August 9, 2025 — PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) provided education and eye examinations to 1,043 students, and distributed 487 free eyeglasses to students in Nabire, Central Papua, in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia together with communities around the operational area.
"Children are the nation's assets. Support for maintaining children's eye health is very important because they are future leaders. Freeport's presence in Nabire emphasizes the realization of our commitment as a company that is beneficial and provides positive impact for the Central Papua community, especially Nabire," said PTFI Director & Executive Vice President (EVP) Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma.
The eye education and examination took place from August 5-8, targeting 8th and 9th grade students at SMP Negeri 1 and SMP Negeri 4 Nabire. This activity is part of PTFI's Social Service agenda in Nabire. In addition to eye education and examination for students, cataract operations for the Nabire community will take place on August 11-13, 2025 at RSUD Nabire.
All activities are a collaboration between PTFI and its partners, including the Central Papua Provincial Government, Nabire Regency Government, Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (PERDAMI), Nabire Regional General Hospital (RSUD), and the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK).
Claus explained that every year PTFI holds Indonesian Independence Day celebrations with residents around the operational area, including village cleaning, health education and examinations, various competitions, and joint ceremonies that strengthen nationalism and patriotism, as well as strengthen togetherness. This year, as an integrated mining company from upstream to downstream, PTFI held more vibrant and beneficial celebrations for communities around the operational area, simultaneously integrated from upstream to downstream. Namely from downstream in Tembagapura, Central Papua, Mimika lowlands, Nabire, Jakarta to Gresik.
"The celebration of the 80th Independence Day from upstream to downstream is an expression of gratitude for Indonesia's independence. The spirit of independence strengthens PTFI's commitment in Papua community empowerment, environmental protection, and strengthening national independence," said Claus.
Meanwhile, Head of Nabire Regency Education Office Dra. Dina Pidjer said the free eye education and examination is very beneficial for children. She appreciated PTFI for this excellent initiative. "Children who may have never had their eyes examined now have the opportunity from PTFI, so they can come directly to school to have their eyes examined," said Dina.
Principal H. Suwandi of SMPN 4 Nabire said his party strongly supports PTFI's efforts because the benefits can be directly felt by students. "Children will become a golden generation that we need to prepare, including taking care of their eye health. If eye health declines, it will affect their activities and productivity in learning," he said.
In other PTFI activities in Nabire, a screening process is also ongoing for cataract patients conducted by a team from RSUD Nabire and the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (PERDAMI) brought in from Makassar and Jayapura. "For the cataract operation plan, a screening process has been conducted on more than 600 people and it is targeted that 80 prospective patients will undergo cataract operations on August 11-14 in Nabire," said Claus.
This entire series of activities can be implemented with full support from the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK), Nabire Regency Government, RSUD Nabire and PERDAMI.
