10 Papuan Children Perform in International-Standard Show

03 July 2025

Jakarta, July 3, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia supports 10 children from Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) in Timika, Central Papua, to participate in an international-standard musical theater workshop and performance titled Broadway Mainstage Jakarta.

"This effort represents Freeport Indonesia's commitment to providing quality education for Papuan children, giving them the widest possible space to develop themselves, including through the arts," said PTFI Vice President Corporate Communications Katri Krisnati.

She explained that the SATP children participated in a workshop organized by Camp Broadway Indonesia on June 23-27 in Jakarta, culminating in a performance at the Finale Showcase 2025 Broadway Mainstage Jakarta titled Peter Pan Jr at Beacon Academy Theater, North Jakarta, Saturday, June 28, 2025. Camp Broadway Indonesia is the only official licensee of Camp Broadway in the Asia-Pacific region.

During the five-day workshop, SATP students from elementary and junior high school levels participated in intensive training from morning to evening. They were required to master songs and performance scenes. They sang, danced, and celebrated together with 14 workshop participants from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, and even from Japan and the United States.

"It's very proud and amazing to see the Broadway performance by SATP Timika children. In five days they were able to adapt to a new environment, communicate and socialize with new friends, and memorize every song and movement. Seeing them happy and performing confidently on stage is truly a source of pride for us," said Katri.

PTFI, Katri continued, has supported SATP children to perform on the Broadway Indonesia stage twice. In 2024, 10 Papuan children were selected to participate in workshops and performances. Before participating in the workshop in Jakarta, they had to undergo selection and compete intensely with dozens of other SATP students in an audition held at the school.

One junior high school SATP student from the Amungme tribe, Titita Omaleng, who played in The Dodgers group, said she was very happy and enjoyed her new experience. "I learned to always be confident and believe that we can give our best. Thank you Freeport Indonesia for giving us the opportunity to participate in this event, continue supporting Papuan children in their creative works," said Titita.

A junior high school student from Kokonau, Janggem Syermince Piry, said he was very happy to be able to channel his singing hobby. "Participating in this event gave me a new experience, coming to Jakarta, it was very fun meeting friends from various regions and learning together in a short time to be able to give the best during the performance," said Piry.

Camp Broadway Indonesia (CBI) Artistic Director Adit Marciano said he was very proud to witness the SATP students' performance. "Our mission is to provide this transformative opportunity to more young Indonesians, celebrating and elevating local talent and sharing our culture with the world. This year we feel honored to welcome back 10 talented children from SATP Timika along with other participants," said Adit.

One of the audience members, Velix Wanggai, who is the former Acting Governor of Papua Mountains, praised the SATP children's performance in the show. Velix, who is also a son of Papua, believes that if they are given space to be creative in culture, sports or education, many confident Papuan children will emerge. This is the foundation for becoming a leader.

"I greatly appreciate the extraordinary efforts and support of PTFI in nurturing Papuan children from various tribes, such as in this Broadway Mainstage event. Children from Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua can perform with extraordinary talent," said Velix, who now serves as Director General of Economic Development and Community Empowerment at the Ministry of Transmigration.

SATP is a boarding school-based school with Superior accreditation built by PTFI through the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK). YPMAK is the manager of PTFI's partnership funds for community development from the two tribes that are PTFI's operational areas.

SATP school is provided free of charge for Papuan children from the Kamoro and Amungme tribes, as well as 5 other related tribes. The total number of SATP students in 2024 is 1,048 children. They receive learning with a national curriculum combined with local values and eco-education.

"We are committed to continue supporting Papuan children to improve their abilities and develop their talents. We hope this effort can bring goodness and progress for Papuan children," she said.
