Almost 100 Percent Freeport Indonesia Employees Have Been Vaccinated

11 December 2021

Director PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), Claus Wamafma, said that the mining company operating in the Mimika Regency, Papua Province has injected the OVID-19 vaccine to 90 percent of its employees and their families residing in the company’s area and estimated this to be over 20.000 people.

“The latest development of the COVID-19 vaccination program has already reached 90 percent. This is something that is very pleasing and giving us sufficient confidence to gradually start opening public facilities located within the company’s area,” Claus said in Timika on Friday.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic which has also hit the PT Freeport Indonesia area, both in the Tembagapura highland and surrounding areas, as well as the lowland, namely Kuala Kencana, Amamapare Portsite and surroundings has since April 2020 until to date become the company’s most serious challenge.

However, due to the excellent way of dealing with said challenge, he said, now the COVID-19 cases in the Freeport area have decreased very drastically, in fact even finding new cases is very scarce.

” If we can control COVID-19 properly then of course employees can work without fear and production can be maintained. At the end of the day, all the stakeholders are able to feel the impact of the company’s operation,” explained Claus.

Since some time ago, PT Freeport Indonesia Management gradually begun to reopen public facilities located within the company’s area, such as places of worship, namely churches and mosques, which are fully accessible to the worshipers by enforcing all health protocols; gym facilities, restaurants and others.

In terms of school activities at YPJ Kuala Kencana and YPJ Tembagapura, both are now open for just two days for face-to-face (off line) learning, while for the other three days classes are held on line.

Similarly, for the employees’ weekly work day-offs (shift day-off/SDO) using bus transportation from Tembagapura to Timika, that is now running again, although not entirely normal yet, as it used to be before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Everything is still being gradually reviewed. We will review everything; it is only natural for all employees and families to long for everything to be as normal as it was before,” he said.

Claus mentioned that the peak period of the COVID-19 transmission within the Freeport area occurred towards the end of June till the beginning of September, recently.

“The period of June till August was really concerning. The number of COVID-19 cases in the company’s area was extremely high; also, we were faced with the scarcity of medical oxygen, limited medical supplies and others,” he related.

During the COVID-19 pandemic the number of PT Freeport employees and its subcontractors who died were around 15 people.
