08 August 2025

Mimika, August 8, 2025 – Residents of Ayuka and Tipuka Villages wore colorful costumes, fringe skirts made from plant fibers, and typical Papuan beaded crowns while performing the Seka Dance in an arts and culture competition organized by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

"This Seka Dance competition is an appreciation and effort to preserve Papuan culture, especially the Kamoro Tribe who live on the Mimika coast. We are proud to support a space for artistic and cultural expression through the Seka Dance Competition," said PTFI Director and Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development, Claus Wamafma.

Ayuka and Tipuka Villages are located in Far East Mimika District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province. The Seka Dance competition took place at the Village Hall on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The Seka Dance is a traditional dance of the Kamoro tribe that symbolizes gratitude to ancestors and represents the blend of local wisdom and nationalism. There were 6 competing groups in the Seka Dance competition. Each group consisted of 10 to 12 people with a total of 72 participants. The jury team consisted of arts and local community representatives: Kartini Mitapo, a Kamoro culture enthusiast from Tipuka Village; Mr. Mananeke, a Kamoro artist from Ayuka Village; and Yulius, a representative from the Indonesian Army

Residents enthusiastically welcomed this competition, which became a valuable opportunity for villagers to meet and greet each other, as well as for residents to interact with PTFI employees who served as competition organizers. The announcement of winners became a much-awaited moment. The jury announced the winners: 1st Place - Ayuka 3 Group with a score of 2,130; 2nd Place - Aruka We Tipuka 1 Group with a score of 2,120; 3rd Place - Ayuka 2 Youth Group with a score of 2,110.

Martinus Mitapo, one of the participants from the Ayuka 3 group and team leader of the winning group, felt proud to represent his team. "We practiced for one month, and we're very happy to win. But most importantly, we were able to show our culture to everyone present here," said Martinus enthusiastically.

Tipuka Village Head Paulus Polcemuka expressed appreciation for PTFI's concern for local cultural heritage. "Activities like this are very important for strengthening culture and can develop talents from children and the community, making the younger generation love their ancestral culture more. Thank you to PTFI for continuing to be present with us," he said.

The Seka Dance competition was one of a series of activities for the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence in the area, organized by PTFI together with the Ayuka and Tipuka communities to strengthen unity and love for the homeland through a cultural approach.

PTFI, as the world's largest integrated copper mining company from upstream to downstream, also celebrated the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence. Throughout August, PTFI organized various activities that channeled the spirit of nationalism and mutual cooperation at five PTFI work locations, from upstream in Papua—including Tembagapura, Kuala Kencana, and Nabire—to downstream in Gresik, East Java, and Jakarta.

In Tembagapura, various competitions and cultural performances were held together with residents of Banti Village. In Mimika, residents enthusiastically participated in Social Service and Village Cleaning activities in Ayuka and Tipuka, as well as competitions for children and adults. In Nabire, Free Cataract Operations, Education and Free Eye Examinations for 1,000 school children, and distribution of 500 free glasses were held. In Gresik, blood donation, digital training for Gresik SMEs, and the Archipelago Copper Melody Concert took place. The culmination was the 80th Indonesian Independence Day Commemoration Ceremony attended simultaneously by all employees and contractors at five PTFI work locations.

The entire series of activities was carried out with full spirit of mutual cooperation and togetherness with residents around the operational areas. Together with the nation's best sons and daughters, PTFI continues to contribute to the country, running safe and sustainable operations as an expression of gratitude for Indonesia's 80 years of independence.
