BBKSDA Papua-Freeport Releases 4.279 Protected Animals

Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BBKSDA) Papua, or the Natural Resources Conservation Center of Papua, along with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) released 4,279 protected animals in the Adat/Tradition Forest area of the Nayaro Village, Mimika Regency, Central Papua.

 

Head of the Conservation Section Region II Timika, Bambang H Lakuy, in a press release received by ANTARA (news agency) in Jayapura on Friday stated, the species released comprised 4,236 pig-snouted turtles (Carettochelys insculpta), 35 green pythons (Morella viridis) and 8 Moluccan monitor lizards (Varanus indicus). “These animals are translocations from the East Java BBKSDA in May of 2023, which were dispatched over two trips, and some which were translocations from DKI Jakarta on June 1, 2023,” he stated.

 

According to Lakuy, the animals had been examined and were declared ready for release into the adat/tradition forest of the Nayaro Village, which is the location of choice of wild releases, due to considerations in terms of the preservation of protected animals. “In addition, the ethnic community of the Nayaro Village also rendered their support, including in terms of these wildlife protection in nature, and therefore this becomes an important factor in terms of endeavours to preserve protected wildlife,” he explained. He added, that thus the adat/tradition forest of Nayaro Village is extremely representative in terms of being a wild release location for protected wildlife.

 

Meanwhile, the Vice President Environmental Department PT Freeport Indonesia, Gesang Setyadi, stated the company continuously supports conservation efforts, particularly in terms of maintaining the biodiversity of Papua. According to Setyadi, since 2006 PT Freeport Indonesia has partnered with the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Center, or the Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BBKSDA), in order to repatriate over 51,000 protected wildlife to their natural habitat. “The animals comprised pig snouts, various species of birds and reptiles, as well as mammals were (previously) impounded and sent from various regions in Indonesia and thereafter released,” he said.

Martana, expressed his gratitude to the PT Freeport Indonesia Environmental Department and the Government Relations Department which facilitated the entire series of wild release activities, in fact since thousands of these animals went through translocation from East Java and DKI Jakarta. “We hope that the synergy and the working collaboration that has been established thus far can continue to be enhanced, thereby enabling the supervision and control of the wildlife’s movement/spread remains protected, more importantly endemic Papua that way is able to fare better in future,” he stated.

 

He added that the Conservation Center appeals to the community at large to participate in maintaining/guarding the for them) to remain sustainable in their natural habitat, thereby enabling the ecosystem to remain balanced/stable and watched over. The said release of those thousands of animals took place on Thursday June 8, 2023 in the framework of commemorating World Environmental Day, simultaneously a series of activities for National Nature Conservation Day 2023.
