Jayapura, 6 May 2026 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in conjunction with Cenderawasih University (UNCEN) formally launched the Executives Teaching Program to reinforce synergy between industry and academia, towards preparing competent and adaptive graduates to counter global challenges confronting industries from Papua.
"We deeply appreciate PTFI commitment to personally venture into our campus. This is no ordinary guest lecture event but offers rare opportunity for students to look into the behind-thescenes operation of a world-class mining industry. Through this contextual instruction, students are expected to learn how to be prepared and equipped to deal with real workplace dynamics,” Cenderawasih University Rector Prof. Dr. Oscar Oswald O. Wambrauw, SE, M.Sc., agr., conveyed in his speech delivered at the closing of the Executives Teach activity held in the Auditorium of the UNCEN-PTFI Science and Partnership Center on 29 April 2026.
The Rector said the industry practitioners presented an authentic perspective to the students. The Executives Teach Program opens up insights into the practice of a world-class mining industry. He further remarked on the high degree of enthusiasm demonstrated by the participating students, as evident in how they paid active attention and posed relevant queries.
During the first session, PTFI Vice President, Mining Safety Division, Eman Widijanto, delivered a presentation on the mechanics of operational safety risk management. He explained PTFI’s risk management is grounded on the company’s SINCERE value system comprising Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect, and Excellence (SINCERE), with safety as the primary work culture and operating standard, including in managing underground mining complexities.
In the second session, PTFI Vice President, Corporate Communications, Katri Krisnati, delivered a presentation on the values of sustainability and inclusiveness and inclusion through the topic of female leadership in the mining industry, specifically the communication role women play in maintaining and building public trust. She underscored how open and effective communication is key to developing longlasting trust.
“Communication must be conducted with clarity and transparency, because all stakeholders are ultimately accountable for the message delivered, and this will, in the end, build trust and confidence,” Katri averred.
The Executives Teach Program follows up on the strategic partnership entered into between the two institutions subsequent to the Science and Partnership Center handover event in December 2025 and signing of the MoU and Collaborative Agreement (PKS) in March 2026. This activity is slated to be held four times a year.
220 students enthusiastically attended the lectures. They were from the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Public Health, and the Faculty of Mathematics & Science. One participant specifically initiated a query on the outlook for opportunities in the mining industry, including regarding the role of women in leadership positions.
"Personally, hearing the experiences of Freeport executives made us aware of how expansive the opportunities are for young Papuans to engage in the industry. The topic on women leaders was particularly inspiring for me as apparently gender is no obstacle to leading in technical sectors such as mining,” a female student from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Merince Kogoya remarked.
UNCEN Second Vice Rector Dr. Ferdinan Risamasu, SE., M.Sc. agr, appreciated the material presented during this activity. “The material delivered was exceptionally significant, presented by speakers with an in-depth understanding of the industry’s essence. Through this collaboration, we hope to bridge curriculum gaps and discrepancies with industry demand, while simultaneously bolstering students’ understanding and comprehension of mining industry digitalization and professional ethics.”
At the end of each session, speakers encouraged students to participate actively in discussion and to engage in networking. “We expect this enthusiasm to drive young Papuans to assume an active role in the management of Papua’s natural resources using sustainable global standards,” Eman said.
