Freeport Commemorates Environment Day, Plants 200 Mangroves

27 May 2022

To commemorate Environment Day, which falls on 5 June 2022, PT Freeport Indonesia by way of its Environmental Department is holding an event to plant mangrove seedlings in the Muara Koropa estuary area, from 25 May through 6 June. This activity is conducted in three batches. The first batch carried out their task on 25 May, with participants consisting of women from the army wives’ association Persit Kartika Chandra Kirana of respectively, Army Infantry Battalion Yonif Raider 754 Branch XXXII and Army Infantry Brigade Raider 20; the police and mobile brigade wives’ association Bhayangkari Battalion B Mobile Brigade; and the Naval Base wives’ association Jalasenastri. Participants totaled around 30 individuals. Meanwhile the second batch with participants consisting of women from Kuala Kencana will conduct their activity on 3  June, and the third batch, consisting of  youths from the Alam Lestari nature organization, on 6 June.

To Timika eXpress, PT Freeport Indonesia Environmental Department representative Tery Gara said the activity is part of the sequence of events in commemoration of Environment Day, to plant around 2000 mangrove seedlings. “The first batch had set a target to plant 800 seedling, but this was exceeded with the participants ultimately planting more than 950 seedlings. The mangrove seedlings  planted were from the genus  rhyzophora mucronata," he revealed at the gorong-gorong bus terminal on Wednesday (25/5).

Tery said the site of the mangrove planting event, known as Muara Koropa, was not originally a sand bank, but due to a sedimentary deposit of tailings evolved into a delta. “Tailings consist of very fine particles similar in consistency to mud, which is highly suitable for the mangrove habitat," he said. Mangroves can withstand sea waves and currents and thus serve as a breakwater to protect coastal areas against erosion, which is one of goals that make up Freeport’s environmental management commitment.

Dian, a participant from the Police Mobile Brigade Brimob Yon B wives’ association said participating in this Freeport activity was her first experience of the kind and was elated and inspired to be part of this outstanding undertaking. "This is my first experience of planting mangrove seedlings in an estuary, and I have discovered a vast expanse of Papuan natural environment that must be protected and conserved,” Dian uttered.

She went on to divulge that this activity has led to her wishing to know more about mangroves, and how to properly plant them. She is now better informed of the benefits of mangroves in not only safeguarding the marine ecosystem, but also to protect the mainland from being ravaged by seawater, as well as keeping people safe from natural disasters.   "It is interesting and inspiring to see how so many people are caring for the environment, despite the challenges encountered,” she ended.  (a30)
