Freeport Commemorates RI Independence, Epitomizing Integrated Upstream to Downstream Minerals Management

17 August 2024

Tembagapura, 17 Agustus 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) conducted simultaneous National Flag-Raising ceremonies in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of Republic of Indonesia Independence Day, in 4 jobsites in 3 provinces, while carrying the theme of “Upstream to Downstream Mining for Indonesia’s Advancement”.

The PTFI ceremony conducted in Tembagapura (at 8.45 am Eastern Indonesia Time) was held at the same time as the ceremony conducted at the Gresik Smelter (at 6.45 am Western Indonesia Time). This was in manifestation of PTFI now implementing an integrated operation with upstream (ore mining and processing) activity in Tembagapura and downstream (refining) activity in Gresik, East Java. Other ceremonies were held at the same time in the Kuala Kencana Common in Mimika, Central Papua, and the PTFI Office in Jakarta.

PTFI President Director Tony Wenas conveyed the flag-raising ceremonies in commemoration of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day carried the sub-theme of “Upstream to Downstream Mining for Indonesia’s Advancement”, in alignment with PTFI commitment to support the minerals downstreaming policy promulgated by the government of Indonesia.

As reported, in June 2024 PTFI completed construction and commenced operation of the world’s biggest single line copper smelter, which stands on 100 hectares in the Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Gresik, East Java.

"This means the biggest underground mine in the world is now integrated with the world’s biggest single line copper smelter, which together with PT Smelting will be producing 1 million tons of copper cathode per year, making Freeport Indonesia the biggest upstream to downstream copper mining operation in the world,” Tony stated.

The ceremony for the raising of the Red and White flag that took place in Tembagapura set a new Indonesia Museum of Records (MURI) for conducting an Indonesian Independence Day commemoration ceremony at a location with the highest elevation, specifically, at 2,000 meters above sea level. After the flag-raising ceremony, PTFI President Director Tony Wenas personally accepted the MURI certificate.

"Congratulatory greetings to all members of the PTFI big family wherever you may be on this 79th Republic of Indonesia Independence Day which we are commemorating. Roll up your sleeves, let us work together safely, from Papua for Indonesia Onward,” Tony proclaimed.
