Freeport Implements Safety Culture for Sustainable Safe Production

25 February 2025

Tembagapura, February 24, 2025 - Executive Vice President Site Operations/Head of Mining Engineering at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Carl Tauran emphasized that Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) culture must be practiced by all workers without exception, anywhere and anytime, to achieve sustainable safe production.

"All employees and company partners have worked hard to collaborate in implementing OHS culture in their work and daily lives. Not limited to just the OHS month momentum, each of us must have full awareness of occupational health and safety for ourselves, colleagues, and others, anytime and anywhere," said Carl during the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Occupational Health and Safety Month (BK3N) in Tembagapura, Sunday (2/23).

The effort to establish an OHS culture, Carl continued, is carried out through several steps. Not only through ceremonial BK3N commemorations, but also through regular internal meetings involving crew chiefs and field crews to openly discuss the obstacles and challenges they face in work areas related to OHS.

"We strive to create safe working conditions by involving all employee lines in scheduled active discussions. Work groups that include management, group leaders, and frontline workers are also involved in OHS inspections and contribute ideas, concepts, and initiatives that can be implemented to improve work safety," Carl explained.

He called on thousands of employees in PTFI's operational area in the Highlands who attended the peak event of BK3N 2025 at Tembagapura Sporthall to implement a safety culture for achieving sustainable safe production.

The Chairman of the PTFI BK3N 2025 Committee, Catur Budiyanto, said that the commemoration of BK3N in 2025 at PTFI has been ongoing since January 10, 2025, and concluded with the Safety Expo peak event on Saturday-Sunday (2/22-23).

"The Safety Expo is a showcase for OHS initiatives carried out by each division at PTFI and presented in the form of exhibition booths. PTFI management, acting as judges, will determine the best OHS initiatives that may potentially be implemented throughout PTFI's operational areas," said Catur.

By presenting the Safety Expo with the theme "Management of Human and Moving Equipment Interaction through Innovation to Improve Mining Safety," Catur hopes that the end of the OHS month commemoration series can increase the participation of all PTFI employees in every proactive effort to identify potential work risks before problems occur.

The commemoration of BK3N in 2025 at PTFI has been successfully held across all PTFI operational areas from the Highlands to the Lowlands with a total of 49 campaigns from 13 different types of campaigns and 15 competitions. All activities refer to three programs: Strategic, Promotional, and Implementation Programs.

"These include safety programs related to the interaction between moving equipment and workers, safety initiatives from each division, safety campaigns, Occupational Disease Prevention campaigns, educational seminars, including Women's Health Awareness to provide information about specific health issues for female workers," said Catur, who also serves as Manager of Grasberg Block Caving (GBC) Production at PTFI.
