Freeport Indonesia Again Supports Early Age Football Development

28 April 2025

Gresik, April 27, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) supports the development of young Indonesian football talent through the organization of the Freeport Grassroots Tournament (FGT) 2025 at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium, Gresik, East Java, April 26-27, 2025.

"This tournament is PTFI's tangible contribution to building a strong foundation for national football while providing opportunities for children in Gresik," said PTFI President Director Tony Wenas.

He said that with early age competitions like FGT, it is hoped that more young talents will be honed and their development directed toward the professional level. "Football not only builds physical abilities but also character, discipline, and teamwork. Therefore, we hope that this FGT momentum in Gresik can truly be utilized well by the Football Schools (SSB). It is important so that children can learn many things from the organization of this tournament," said Tony.

PTFI, he continued, is proud to be part of the early journey of Indonesian children toward their dreams of becoming professional football players and hopes that this tournament will be a valuable and inspiring experience for every participant. He expressed appreciation and thanks to the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) which has supported PTFI in organizing this activity through PT Garuda Sepak Bola Indonesia (GSI).

"This year marks a momentum to strengthen the joint commitment between PTFI and PSSI in building the future of Indonesian football from the grassroots," he said.

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir said that the key in many countries where football has advanced is to lay the main foundation on early age football development. "I appreciate PT Freeport's participation, which always supports Indonesian football's advancement. This trust strengthens PSSI's commitment to continue improving early age football, both through competition, collaboration, and quality coach training that is very important and has a positive influence on the development of young players," said Erick Thohir.

FGT was first held in 2024 in Gresik and Jayapura. This year, for FGT in Gresik, the scope of participation has been expanded by adding the U-10 age category compared to the previous year which only had the U-12 category. Each category includes 10 Football Schools (SSB) in Gresik, bringing the total to 20 SSBs.

FGT 2025 in Gresik was officially closed by PTFI's Vice President Business Process Smelting & Refining Aripin Buman, together with PSSI Executive Committee (Exco) Ahmad Riyadh. Both also presented certificates to the winners of FGT 2025 in Gresik, namely U-12 SSB Sindogres and U10 SSB Pesawat Wadeng.

As a form of appreciation, at the end of the FGT 2025 tournament, all teams will receive football shoes. A total of 300 pairs of football shoes will be distributed, which are expected to motivate children to continue pursuing this sport seriously.
