Mimika, April 11, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is supporting the creation of a strong and professional football ecosystem in Papua, including backing the Football League 4 Competition for the Central Papua Region.

"PT Freeport Indonesia continues to demonstrate its commitment to developing young Papuan talent in sports. It's not just talk. The spirit is to contribute to the revival of football in Papua. The participation of football clubs from Central Papua in this competition can open opportunities for young players to develop their talents at the national level," said Claus Wamafma, Director & Executive Vice President (EVP) of Sustainable Development at PTFI, speaking to the media during the opening of the League 4 Competition for Central Papua Region at Wania Inipi Stadium SP-1, Mimika, Central Papua, Wednesday (4/9).

Claus said that many positive outcomes emerge from football competitions, such as the spirit of sportsmanship, mutual respect, teamwork, and certainly the improved quality of the young Papuan generation. "Freeport Indonesia appreciates the Central Papua Provincial Association for organizing League 4 Central Papua Region, which includes seven districts in Central Papua Province. There's also encouragement from Governor Meki Nawipa to hold the PSSI League 4. This competition marks the revival point for football in Central Papua," Claus said.

He hopes the competition will run regularly and could bring the best team from Central Papua to the next round (League 3, League 2, League 1). "We hope that someday there will be a team from Central Papua we can be proud of in League 1," he said.

Meanwhile, Central Papua Governor Meki Fritz Nawipa, when opening the competition, said that the Football League 4 Tournament for Central Papua Region is historic because it's being held for the first time in Central Papua. "I hope this momentum can ignite the spirit of the younger generation to pursue football until someday they can become like the legend Boaz Solossa and other great players," the Governor said.
