Freeport-Mimika Government Test Clean Water for Timika Residents

19 March 2025

Timika, March 19, 2025 -- PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) together with the Mimika Regency Government are testing the distribution of clean water from the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) facility in Kuala Kencana to 2,700 homes in Timika.

"Clean water is a basic human need. We need clean water for cooking, drinking, washing, bathing, and so on. This clean water program is part of a collaborative effort between the local government and PTFI to improve the quality of life for the people of Mimika through the provision of sustainable clean water," said Director & Executive Vice President (EVP) of Sustainability Development of PTFI Claus Wamafma in Timika, Wednesday.

Claus explained that the testing is currently being conducted in Settlement Unit I Complex, Settlement Unit III, Government Housing, and Prosecutor's Office Housing. Subsequently, it will gradually expand to other areas. The total connections that have already been installed in homes in these four areas is 12,000 household connections. Of this number, 2,700 homes are already enjoying clean water.

To ensure the smooth distribution of clean water from the WTP to residents' homes, PTFI together with the Department of Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) conducted joint monitoring on Wednesday (5/3). The Head of the PUPR Department of Mimika Regency, Robert Mayout, led this monitoring accompanied by Vice President (VP) of Government Relations of PTFI, Lenny Josephina.

Robert explained that this free trial is conducted for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. "We have checked directly to residents' homes in the SP 2 area, Government Housing 1, and the SP 3 area of Timika city to ensure that clean water can be well received by the community," he said.

A resident in the SP-2 Complex of Timika, Lala Darmayana, shared that she had been using well water. Other residents utilize collected rainwater or bore wells to meet their daily water needs. As for drinking water, residents buy bottled water. "In the past, we residents here got water from wells, and now there are pipe connections to homes. We are happy that clean water has started flowing," said Lala.

Lenny said that with clean water, residents receive many benefits. From a health perspective, it can reduce the risk of skin diseases, digestive disorders, and bacterial infections. From an environmental perspective, it reduces plastic waste from bottled water. While the economic benefit is that residents save expenses by not buying bottled water.

The WTP is a drinking water treatment facility located on 1.36 hectares of land in Kuala Kencana. This complex is equipped with supporting facilities such as offices, laboratories, generator rooms, panel rooms, pump houses, and transformer houses to support the operation of clean water treatment.
