PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) again sends the second phase of tailings sand aggregate to Merauke Regency which will be used for the construction of roads and other public facilities undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR). The delivery was carried out on Wednesday (27/1/2021) via the temporary port at mile 11, the PTFI mining road area. Meanwhile, the first phase of tailings sands aggregate delivery was carried out in December 2020 as many as 4,000 tons by barge to Merauke.
“Delivery of the second phase of 3,500 tons of 1,750 m3 of tailings will be carried out tonight (last Wednesday. Red), hopefully, there will be no weather or other obstacles,” said Project Manager for Tailings Utilization of PTFI, Harry Joharsyah.
It is explained PTFI supports the PUPR in constructing infrastructure in the regions, especially in Papua. The utilization of tailings sand aggregate has received approval or recommendation from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).
Quoting the statement of the Deputy Minister of PUPR, John Wempi Wetipo the results of research conducted by the PUPR showed PTFI’s tailings material has met quality standards so that it can be used as an aggregate material for the construction of infrastructure.
“Tailings are no longer waste but resources,” said John Wetipo at the inauguration ceremony for the tailing delivery on December 15 in Timika as quoted in the release. Vice President Director of PTFI, Jenpino Ngabdi admits this tailings management as PTFI’s commitment to minimize the impact of the company’s operations on the environment based on the applicable regulations. “Furthermore, the tailings utilization that we have processed with the government to multiply the value-added which we create for Mimika Regency and other regions in Papua through various activities,” said Jenpino.
The tailings utilization is a part of the implementation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Decree No SK.101/Menlhk/PLA/Setjen/PLA.0/1/2019 concerning the implementation of the Roadmap for PT Freeport Indonesia’s Tailing Management in Papua. “Besides sending tailings to Merauke, currently PTFI is also discussing a plan to send tailings sand to Sorong and Nugure,” added Jenpino.
