Hundreds of Pig-Nosed Turtles from Bali to Be Released in Papua

04 July 2023

The Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency has received a total of 500 pig-nosed turtles (Carettochelys insculpta) which were transferred from Bali to Papua in stages by the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency.

As quoted in a press release received in Jayapura on Tuesday (4/7), the Head of the Timika Region II Conservation Section, Bambang H. Lakuy, said the transfer of the pig-nosed turtles from Bali to Papua was carried out in nine trips from May 8 to July 3, 2023. According to him, pig-nosed turtles have been transported from Bali to Papua every Monday since May 8, 2023.

On the first trip, 40 pig-nosed turtles were brought to Papua, and on the second to eighth trips, 60 pig-nosed turtles were transported from Bali to Papua. On the ninth or final trip on Monday, July 3, 2023, 40 pig-nosed turtles were transported to Papua from Bali.

Bambang said all the pig-nosed turtles sent to Papua were in good health and were undergoing habituation in PT Freeport Indonesia's Mile 21 transit pens. "Each arrival of the pig-nosed turtles is accompanied by an anti-stress medicine from the Bali BKSDA, and upon arrival at the transit pens, we usually rest the animals for a while, then we give them the medicine one by one. After that, we release them into an artificial pond to undergo habituation," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Agus Budi Santosa, said the 500 pig-nosed turtles transferred to Papua have confiscated animals. Before being brought to Bali, the pig-nosed turtles were kept in care for eight years at the Bali Safari and Marine Park, a conservation organization assisted by the Bali BKSDA. " The 500 pig-nosed turtles have been translocated from Bali to Papua to be released into their natural habitat," said Agus.

The Head of the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Center, A.G. Martana, expressed his gratitude to the Bali BKSDA, PT Freeport Indonesia, and Bali Safari and Marine Park for helping care for the pig-nosed turtles and moving them to Papua. The Pig-nosed turtles are classified as endangered animals according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and are protected species in Indonesia.
