10 December 2024

Jakarta, December 10, 2024 – The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) through its Student Affairs Directorate (Ditmawa ITB), presented an award to PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) for its commitment and active contribution to ITB student affairs, which includes providing scholarships, graduate recruitment, competitions and achievement events, and student character development.

The award was presented by the Director of ITB Ditmawa D.Arch. G. Prasetyo Adhitama, S.Sn, M.Sn. to PTFI management, represented by Senior Vice President (SVP) of Geo Engineering & Environmental PTFI Ardhin Yuniar at ITB East Hall, Bandung, Friday (12/6). I

TB Vice Rector for Administration & Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jaka Sembiring, M.Eng. expressed appreciation to PTFI and other ITB partners who were present to receive awards. "It is hoped that business world participation in educational development, as demonstrated by partners including PTFI, will continue to increase in supporting ITB's efforts and other Indonesian universities in producing Indonesia's future golden generation," he said.

Senior Vice President (SVP) of Geo-Engineering & Environmental PTFI, Ardhin Yuniar, said Freeport Indonesia has a sustainable commitment to social investment, particularly in education. Of PTFI's total social investment of 122 million US dollars in 2023, 30 percent was allocated for educational programs.

In the last 30 years, PTFI has invested approximately 2.1 billion US dollars and budgeted more than 100 million US dollars per year for its social investments until 2041. "The implementation of educational programs is a realization of PTFI's commitment to work for the nation, realizing the aspirations of Golden Indonesia 2045," said Ardhin.

He explained that this partnership with ITB began when PTFI President Director Tony Wenas, along with then-Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Freeport-McMoRan Richard C. Adkerson, accompanied the Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) to seven Indonesian universities, including ITB, in October 2022.

During the visit, PTFI committed to providing direct financial assistance of Rp5 million for 50 students, scholarship assistance for 10 selected undergraduate students until graduation, and research funding assistance of Rp1.5 billion. Similar partnership support has also been established by PTFI with the University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS), Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Cenderawasih University (Uncen), and Port Numbay.

"These partnerships with universities are one form of PTFI's social investment in education. We have long been running various programs, especially supporting youth development from areas around PTFI's operational activities in Mimika, Central Papua," said Ardhin.

Based on PTFI data, currently more than 1,100 Papuan children are pursuing education domestically and abroad through PTFI scholarships, ranging from primary education to university level. More than 1,700 other students are also studying in five dormitories managed by PTFI in Papua. Additionally, through vocational programs, internships, and the Papuan Bridge Program at the Nemangkawi Mining Institute, more than 4,000 students have received training, where more than 90 percent of participants are native Papuans.
