Two indigenous institutions in Timika, such as Amungme Tribe Customary Institution (Lemasa) and Kamoro Tribe Customary Institution (Lemasko) meet with the President Director and senior management of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Tembaga Room, Rimba Papua Hotel, Wednesday (6/4/2021).

On that occasion, President Director of PTFI, Tony Wenas explained some progress related to the company’s operations, commitment, and contributions to partner institutions such as Lemasa, Lemasko, Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK), as well as Humanitarian Anti-Violence Foundation (YAHAMAK).

“As we all know in December 2018 the government through Inalum officially owns 51% of PTFI shares. Even though there has been a change in the share ownership, PT Freeport Indonesia continues to uphold its commitment to the community, including partnership fund for community development and also two customary institutions that are partners of the company, Lemasa and Lemasko,” said Tony.

Tony Wenas also explained the production will decline during the transition process from the open pit operational to the underground mining. Besides, the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the company’s operations so there are adjustments in the work area. The company continues to provide public education about health protocols and cooperate with the regional government through the health office to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

Responding to this from two indigenous institutions, Lemasa and Lemasko welcome well and appreciate PTFI as well as fully support the company’s operations. Both institutions also hope PTFI can continue to contribute to the development of indigenous Papuans.

Representing Lemasko, Gregorius Okoare stated some matters including supporting the change of LPMAK to YPMAK. Lemakso also fully supports PTFI’s operations including the Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) and the tailing utilization program by the government.

“We are from the indigenous institution fully support PT Freeport Indonesia to continue operating in Timika,” he said. On that occasion, Gregorius Okoare also explains some of his party’s program and contribution to the Kamoro community. The same was also state by Stingal Johny Beanal representing Lemasa. Another thing that was stated by the Lemasa and Lemasko administrators was the hope that education, health, economic development, especially scholarship programs can create Amungme-Kamoro excellence human resources. Meanwhile, related to the security situation in Banti and its surrounding, both institutions hoped the situation can immediately recover so people can live in peace. “Lemasa and Lemasko will be a big honai (traditional house) to voice the voices of the Amungme-Kamoro people,” said Stingal.
