Mimika Regency Government and Freeport Collaborate to Provide Clean Water

14 June 2023

The Mimika Regency Government and PT Freeport Indonesia have developed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are 17 goals set, such as health, infrastructure, and environment.

Development is carried out collaboratively between the Mimika Regency Government and related parties, especially PT Freeport Indonesia, through a partnership program in various fields.

To achieve this goal, the Mimika Regency Government and PTFI developed an action plan for a partnership program to supply clean water, sanitation, and efforts to improve community nutrition and control environment-based diseases. The action plan preparation meeting was held on Wednesday, June 14, at the Swissbell Inn Timika.

Head of Fispra Bappeda Mimika, Scienray Aris Morin, SE, MSi, said that the fulfillment of clean water for the people in Mimika is still a problem because it collides with raw water sources. So that several villages cannot be built.

The Mimika Regency Government had developed several approaches to solving sectoral issues, including stunting. However, this is also influenced by the availability of clean water and nutrition fulfillment. For this reason, in planning, Bappeda directs several locations to carry out joint and collaborative interventions.

So that in this meeting, it is hoped that there will be an agreement that will be followed up together, one of which is the provision of clean water. "So this is an illustration for us to agree on a location that is a problem of clean water and sanitation to carry out joint interventions," he explained.

Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Claus Wamafma, said that PT Freeport Indonesia was present and wanted to participate and contribute to the development of Mimika. Economically, Freeport's contribution to Papua's PDRV is 34 percent, particularly Mimika at 70 percent.

Previously, Freeport's contribution to Mimika's GRDP reached 90 percent. But there was reinforcement outside the mining sector, so the numbers started to fall. "This is the hope that we will no longer depend on mines which will stop when the reserves are finished," he said.

Freeport is committed to providing benefits not only for shareholders but also for stakeholders. So that the continuity of Freeport's operations must be maintained because the state and society feel and enjoy the benefits.

Not only focusing on operations, but Freeport is also committed to carrying out its commitments in various fields, including the economy, education, and health. In the health sector, in 2021, basic health research was carried out, which is fully supported by Freeport to photograph interventions that have been carried out and health issues that have occurred in Mimika.

The research results illustrate that health problems are not only handled by the Health Office but require cross-sectoral involvement, such as the provision of clean water, availability of nutritious food, and sanitation. "We at Freeport Indonesia have a social commitment, namely that society must be prosperous," he said.

Regarding clean water, Freeport has built a water treatment facility to distribute to the people in Mimika. However, the distribution network has been prepared by the Mimika Regency Government. So for operations waiting for the readiness of the distribution network.

Mimika Regional Secretariat Assistant for General Administration, Hendritte Tandiyono, asked all parties to collaborate in running the program. This is because the government is targeting that by 2026 there will be no more stunting, skin diseases, and malaria. For this reason, the action plan drawn up must be followed up. "We are here for the welfare of the community. Programs should not overlap," he said.
