Papua Athletics Center (PAC) Athletes Bag Seven Medals in Central JavaOpen 2024 Tournament

Jakarta, 2 July 2024 – Athletes from  the Papua Athletics Center (PAC) team performed brilliantly during the Central Java (Jateng) Open 2024 tournament, garnering seven medals consisting of two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals while competing at the  Tri Lomba Juang Stadium in, Semarang from  27 June through  29 June. 

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and PB PASI voiced appreciation for the achievements made by the Papua Athletics Center team at the Jateng Open 2024 tournament. “The PAC team’s accomplishments during the Jateng Open 2024 demonstrates athletes’ earnestness in undergoing the coaching program at the training center. Freeport Indonesia, in synergy with  PB PASI maintains its commitment to advance the people of Papua, in this case through the sport of athletics/ track and field,” PTFI Director &  EVP for Sustainable Development & Community Relations Claus Wamafma averred. 

All Indonesia Athletics Union Central Executive Board (PB PASI) General Secretary Tigor Tanjung expressed appreciation and pride  over the PAC athletes’ achievements. “These achievements result from the intensive training the  entire team undergo, as well as their high degree of dedication and fighting spirit. The hope is for these successes  to encourage and spur all members of Papua Athletics Center to continue developing and earn even more brilliant achievements ahead,” Tigor said.   

On the first day, the relay race team comprising Eqman Yance E. Kafai, Maurits Rawar, Triyanerapa Ayorbaba, and Mergina Asyerem succeeded in bagging the gold medal for the mixed men’s-women’s  4x400 meter relay race, posting a time of 3 minutes 33.95 seconds. In the men’s discus throw event, Merauke athlete Eventinus Gebze succeeded in contributing a silver medal with a throw distance of 42.40 meters. Meanwhile in the women’s 800-meter dash, Jacquennline J.F. Pinontoan placed seventh with a time of 2 minutes 46.78 seconds. 

The second day was filled with more accomplishments by PAC. Biak Numfor athlete Mergina Asyerem earned the gold medal in the women’s 400-meter dash, with a time of 57.48 secondsk. Elizabeth Marta Putri Baminggen from Nabire added to the medals score with a silver medal in the women’s shot put event with a throw distance of 12.70 meters. Silfanus Ndiken from Merauke and Eventinus Gebze each contributed more additions to the collection of medals , with a silver medal and a bronze medal respectively in the men’s javelin throw event, with throw distances of 63.31 meters and 62.36 meters, respectively.  

Meanwhile Tri Yanerapa Ayorbaba ( in women’s 200m dash), Maurits Rawar ((n  men’s 200m dash), Feleria Kaumapokeyau (for javelin throw) and Fransisko Adrianto Makaminang (in men’s 1500m dash) similarly performed admirably on the second say, albeit winning no medal.

On the third day, in the men’s 4x400 relay race, the relay team consisting of  Krisdianto Makringo, Mandala Putra Rumaikewi, Eqman Yance E. Kafiar, and Maurits Rawar won a bronze medal with a time of 3 minutes 16.59 seconds. Meanwhile Elizabeth M.P. Baminggen and Jacquennline J.F. Pinontoan did not earn a medal in the women’s hammer throw and 800 meter dash events respectively.  

Tigor said the medals earned by the PAC team in the  Jateng Open 2024 competitions offer real evidence that the consistent training the athletes undergo  can lead to splendid achievements.   

"We are committed to continuing support and facilitation for PAC athletes, to ensure they reach their utmost potential in various competitions, nationally and internationally,” Tigor stated.  

Papua Athletics Center is a training center for athletics/ track and field sports that is managed by PB PASI, and is aimed at identifying young talented track and field athletes from Papua. With full support from PTFI, Papua Athletics Center is committed to bringing about continuing achievements by young Papuans in track and field sports, while providing high-quality facilities and coaching to assist them in reaching their utmost potential in national as well as international arenas.  

An intensive training program along with PAC athletes’ full dedication is expected to continue towards producing even more accomplished athletes in the future.
