The Environmental and Forestry Agency (DLHK) of Papua Province, together with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), aims to plant trees on 594-hectare land in Jayapura Regency.

The Head of DLHK Papua, Jan Jap Ormuseray, stated in Jayapura on Wednesday that there will be 1,100 trees planted per hectare on the 594-hectare land in Jayapura Regency. "Our target is to complete the planting on this 594-hectare land by 2024, with a total of 653,400 (trees)," he said.

He explained that out of these thousands of trees, 40 percent are fruit trees that can bring economic value to the local community. "We plant 40 percent fruit trees to provide a source of livelihood for the community," he added.

The Program Manager for River Basin (DAS) Rehabilitation at the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Jayapura Office, Dandi Sopiandi, explained their support for the government's program in rehabilitating the river basin areas. "There are four villages, 19 groups, and 291 planters in Jayapura Regency who will plant trees until the entire land is fully planted by 2024," he said.

The Head of the Membramo River Basin Management Office at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Irwan Valentino Sihotang, added that tree planting is an effort by the government to rehabilitate critical lands. "We are assisting the community in enhancing their knowledge and skills in forest fire management so that the planted trees can be better preserved," he said.
