Timika, June 23, 2025 – Four students from Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) are currently undergoing intensive training ahead of the final of the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) 2025 competition to be held August 2-6, 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
SATP Principal Sonianto Kuddi said they are participating in intensive training at the SATP Achievement Task Implementation Unit (UPT) for academic, psychological, mental and physical preparation. "The goal is to prepare them for international-level competition abroad. Training is conducted three times a week from 08:00 to 15:00 WIT," he said.
Director & EVP Sustainable Development PTFI Claus Wamafma said PTFI is very proud that SATP children continue to achieve outstanding results. They can serve as motivation for other Papuan children who are currently pursuing their studies with PTFI scholarships.
"We are proud because they are high-achieving sons and daughters of Papua who are studying at SATP. This is a school that was established and whose operations are managed from PTFI's social investment funds," he said.
Claus said PTFI provides scholarships to Papuan children through partnership funds managed by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK). These partnership funds are part of social investment and have been ongoing for almost 30 years.
The four SATP students who will represent Indonesia at the AIMO Final in Japan previously won the AIMO competition held at Sekolah Integral Hidayatullah-Timika, Mimika Regency, last May. They are Yulian Diwitau, a 4th grade elementary student, and Eka Balinol, a 5th grade elementary student, who both won gold medals. Meanwhile, Yoram Kum Uamang, a 7th grade middle school student, won a silver medal, and Derinus Janampa, an 8th grade middle school student, also won a silver medal.
"Freeport hopes they can achieve maximum results in the upcoming championship, and importantly, can continue learning to achieve success in the future," he said. Mimika Regent's Expert Staff Septinus Timang said the Mimika Regional Government will provide full support for all YPMAK programs in education, health and local community economic empowerment.
YPMAK's involvement in these three areas has been assessed as very helpful to the regional government in efforts to improve the status and welfare of indigenous Papuan communities in Mimika.
"The regional government will certainly continue to provide support, especially since YPMAK is a strategic partner that has been supporting the regional government in human resource development aspects specifically for the Amungme and Kamoro communities," said Septinus.
Educational scholarships are PTFI's commitment to improving the quality of human resources around the company's operational area and supporting the education of Papua's younger generation, particularly in Mimika Regency. The total active PTFI scholarships through YPMAK at the end of 2024 reached 4,059 students, ranging from basic education to higher education.
