PT Freeport Indonesia's Rescue Team Sends Top Representatives to Participate in IFRC 2023

30 August 2023

Mining Safety Division - Emergency Preparedness & Rescue (EP&R) PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) dispatched a deputation consisting of 10 of its best members and three observers to participate in a competition at the national level, the 20th Indonesian Fire and Rescue Competition (IFRC) that is being held in the PT Borneo Indo Bara area in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan from 1 September to 12 September 2023. In this competition PTFI sent the 10 best members and three observers.

The delegation team dispatched from Timika to Banjarmasin on Tuesday (8/29) originates from the Mining Safety Team and is led by PTFI's Team Rescue Manager, Purnomo. "The team members dispatched are seasoned in performing rescue activities, through experience in participating in several emergency incidents at the PTFI jobsite as well as the Mimika area, including a rescue mission following a helicopter crash in June 2022 in the Timika forest area," Purnomo disclosed. The team had been training and making preparations from May through August 2023.

This competition serves as a concrete step to strengthen PTFI's commitment to worker safety and operational safety and enhance the response in supporting evacuation rescue during emergency situations in the Mimika Regency area.

The IFRC organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is designed as a vehicle for all teams to learn from each other and collaborate, to exchange know-how on rescue and teamwork techniques in preventing fatalities and injuries during rescue operations.

Since 1995, the IFRC has become a regular event, and PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has been participating from the outset of competitions. Every year companies in the mining, oil and gas, and energy sectors gather to compete and trade information on handling accidents at work.

Some of the other companies participating in this year’s IFRC include PT Kalimantan Prima Persada, PT Adaro Indonesia, PT Cipta Kridatama, PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Berau Coal Energy Tbk, and other mining companies. They will participate in various contests in various categories such as Fire Fighting, Underwater Rescue, Road Accident, Confined Space Rescue, Skill Competition Test, Combat Challenge, High Angle Rescue, and others.

"We are confident that the experience garnered by the EP&R team from MSD Division will serve them well in the competitions, as well as allow them to measure and increase their level of readiness in tackling various challenges encountered during rescue missions in the PTFI operating area and surroundings,” PTFI EVP, Technical Services, Chris Zimmer ended in stating his support for the PTFI rescue team as they were about to depart.
