Supporting the Sustainability of Mimika’s Estuarine Ecosystem, Freeport Releases 10,000 Barramundi Fingerlings and 1,000 Mangrove Crabs

31 May 2026

Mimika, 30 May 2026 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has conducted a restocking program by releasing 10,000 barramundi (white snapper) fingerlings and 1,000 mangrove crabs along the Mimika estuary to help maintain the balance of estuary ecosystems while supporting the sustainability of livelihoods for communities along the southern estuary of Mimika.

“The restocking program is an effort to ensure the sustainability of barramundi and mangrove crab populations, both of which possess significant economic value and serve as important sources of income for fishermen and the Kamoro community in Mimika,” said Gesang Setyadi, Vice President Environmental of PTFI, during the release of the barramundi fingerlings and mangrove crabs at the Tipuka Estuary, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, on Thursday, 28 May 2026.

Gesang explained that the initiative is a follow-up to research and collaboration between PTFI and Universitas Papua (UNIPA) through fisheries surveys, which indicated increasing demand for fish and crab resources. The program also forms part of the company’s commitment to supporting environmental conservation in areas surrounding its operations.

Clemens Ohoilulin, Head of the Mimika Regency Fisheries Office, commended PTFI’s initiative for delivering tangible benefits to estuary communities.

“This restocking initiative provides direct benefits to local communities. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our collaboration with PTFI, including plans to expand restocking programs to other commodities such as tilapia and common carp,” said Clemens.

Gesang added that, beyond maintaining healthy fish and crab populations, the program also fulfills PTFI’s obligations under the technical approval issued by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment in 2023. Under the approval, PTFI is required to implement measures that enhance mangrove ecosystem services in estuary areas.

PTFI has engaged approximately 27 local contractors from five estuary villages—Nayaro, Koperapoka, Nawaripi, Ayuka, and Tipuka—to construct estuarine structures designed to facilitate sediment deposition, which are subsequently planted with mangroves. To date, PTFI has undertaken mangrove rehabilitation and planting activities across more than 2,100 hectares in the Ajkwa Estuary.

“Previously, in 2025, PTFI also released 10,000 juvenile barramundi and 500 breeding mangrove crabs in the Ajkwa Estuary. The program is intended to continue on a sustainable basis as part of the company’s long-term commitment to preserving the estuary ecosystems of Central Papua,” Gesang concluded.
