National Sports Week (PON) XX Papua Grand Committee for Sub Mimika is ready to hold the Mimika Cluster PON XX Fire Carnival, Tuesday, 28 September 2021. Head of the Ceremony Division of the PON XX Papua Grand Committee for Sub Mimika, Handry K. Titaley explained the journey of the 'eternal fire' torch in Mimika will start from the airport Mozes Kilangin headed to the State Hall in Karang Glad Village, SP 3, Timika, Mimika Regency.
"There, former athletic athlete and decathlon record holder, Yulius Uwe will hand the torch to the Regent of Mimika then bury the fire in the Pendopo. Next, the fire will be carried out at the match venues," explained Handry in Timika, Saturday (25/9/2021).
The fire carnival will start from Kuala Kencana which is the Athletic Venue for the Marathon, 10K Fast Walk, and 20K Fast Walk. Handry admitted, the fire carnival starting from Kuala Kencana was a symbol of appreciation to PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) for its contribution to Papuan sports, especially Mimika.
"PTFI's contribution towards the PON is extraordinary, we must acknowledge and appreciate it. PTFI has even built an MSC which will be used as an athletics and basketball venue," said Handry. Kuala Kencana is one of the areas of PT Freeport Indonesia in the Mimika Regency.
After the ceremony in Kuala Kencana, the XX PON flame torch will be displayed at the Climbing Venue, MSC, GOR Futsal, GSG Eme Neme Yauware, and will end at the Performing Arts Field in the former Timika Central Market. "The goal is to encourage the athletes who are and will compete in the PON XX Papua," said Handry.
Based on Seputarpapua.com's observation, Kuala Kencana, which is a residential and industrial area of Low Land, has now been decorated with PON XX knick-knacks. Supervision of health and safety protocols has also been increased since entering from Check Point. At the Kuala Kencana square, a photo spot for Drawa and Kangpho was also installed. Visitors can take selfies for memories while enjoying the cool air in the city full of beautiful plants.
Vice President for Government Relations of PT Freeport Indonesia, Jonny Lingga quoted the assessment of the Technical Delegate (TD) for Athletics PON XX, saying, Kuala Kencana is the cleanest athletic venue and free of air pollution.
"The Marathon Run and the Fast Walk will be held in the Kuala Kencana area. TD for athletics stated that this place is the best and most beautiful marathon venue in Indonesia, because of the environment and clean air," said Jonny, Monday, 13 September 2021.
