To Mitigate Spread of Corona in Papua Freeport Opens Referral Lab

03 June 2020

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in an effort to mitigate spreading of the Corona virus has upgraded its company’s medical services by expanding the scope of medical examinations to include the ability to more rapidly identifying positive cases and  tracing methods to break the chain of infections.

By having PCR equipment and about 50,000 rapid test kits currently on hand has enabled PTFI to detect and to mitigate Covid-19 cases, isolate those infected, and to provide patients with the required treatment and medical care. PTFI is also assisting the community by allowing them the use of Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests and its laboratories to analyze Covid-19 swab tests coming from Mimika hospitals and neighboring ones in Papua

Manager External Corporate Communication PTFI Kerry Yarangga explained in Kuala Kencana that as per May 31, 2020, the PTFI Lab was able to analyze at least 370 swab samples from the Mimika General Hospital and the Mitra Masyarakat Hospital. The Covid-19 Laboratory of PTFI has the license to operate

“We are happy to be able to contribute more to the community in this pandemic by analyzing swab samples of suspected Covid-19 cases,” Kerry said in a written release on the Monday before the Lab started operating. Swab tests take up to one week to bring results.

At the moment results can be delivered much faster like in a few hours or a few days.  Corona virus cases can be detected much faster than before and much easier to trace which help to break the chain of Covid-19 rapidly.

“PT Freeport Indonesia has played a very significant role in assisting the Task Force Covid-19 Mitigation Team by providing one referral lab in the Province if Papua,” said Reynold Rizal Ubra, spokesman for the Task Force. This new lab is one of the many efforts from PTFI to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 in the entire working area.

During the last few months, PTFI was able to arrange for the hiring of 54 additional health professionals, including five general practitioners, two medical specialists, three lab technicians, two radiographers, two pharmacists and many non-medical workers. According to Reynold the number of recoveries from positive corona cases in Mimika are continuously increasing. On Sunday (5/31) the number of recoveries counted 93,

Most of the recoveries are referrals of the Tembagapura Hospital. A contributing factor to recovery is good medical treatment which included nutritional supplements.

The majority of recoveries are also people without underlying diseases. Prioritizing health and safety of its workers and that of the surrounding communities is a commitment of PTFI.

By applying steps of prevention and mitigation throughout its working area, PTFI in cooperation with the Mimika Administration’s COVID-19 Task Force has succeeded in minimizing the impact of Covid-19 on its workers and the surrounding communities.
