Tony Wenas: Freeport Supports Government Effort to Reduce Carbon Emission

06 November 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas asserted his company’s commitment to reducing carbon emission. This was conveyed during the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. "PT Freeport Indonesia, PTFI is one of the companies participating to reduce emissions to protect the climate from temperature increases  in excess of the target that has been determined,” Tony Wenas stated when he visited the Indonesia Pavilion inside the COP27 area on Sunday (6/11/2022).

Tony Wenas said Freeport is currently conducting a mining operation that addresses sustainability. This is among others conducted through application of new electricity-based technology. "Certainly, as a mining company mining for copper there will be gold and silver yielded as well. But it is possible for the manner in which we conduct mining to be sustainable. For instance, we are committed to reduce carbon emissions in our operations by 30 percent by 2030," Tony Wenas asserted. "The plans we are scrutinizing will allow us to increase emissions reduction to 60 percent by 2030,” he continued.

Tony Wenas went on to underscore PT Freeport Indonesia’s support for the government’s hard work towards reducing carbon emission. “Our presence at the Indonesia Pavilion in COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh is by way of supporting the government’s program in achieving the established goal,” he said.

He proceeded to disclose the measures Freeport Indonesia is taking in meeting its commitment. First, it is utilizing an electricity driven unmanned railway to replace the huge haul trucks that use diesel fuel. “This of course reduces emission in a highly drastic manner. Additionally, our dewatering plant that had previously used fuel oil now employs a compression method utilizing electricity,” he revealed.

According to Tony Wenas, PT Freeport Indonesia is also actively carrying out land rehabilitation. More than 5 million plants were used to revegetate areas with a total coverage of 1,150 hectares. “In Jayapura revegetation was carried out on more than 3,300 hectares. We are also planting mangroves on 100 hectares per year towards meeting a target of 10,000 hectares. Mangroves serve to absorb even more carbon. These are some of the programs we are conducting in the endeavor to reduce carbon emissions to prevent rising temperatures, as the world and the Indonesian government are hoping for,” he said.

Lastly, he expressed the hope that all would work together side by side to reduce carbon emission and protect against climate change. “We must work closely together with the government and the private sector; we cannot go our own ways. This is not just in the interest of Indonesia alone, but for the whole world, for our children and grandchildren,” he ended.
