Tony Wenas Reveals Way to Reduce Carbon Emission in Mines

The world is currently focusing on the issue of climate change.  Various giant corporations in the world have also been participating in this matter including Indonesia. In the mining sector PT Freeport Indonesia has been pursuing various strategies to reduce carbon emission in their exploitation activities.  PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas said that efforts to mitigate carbon emission have become the company’s commitment.

"Our commitment is to achieve a reduction of 30% in the intensity of greenhouse gas by 2030,” he said during an interview with CNBC Indonesia on Wednesday (11/02/202) also explaining that Freeport’s open mining activities have come to a halt and have now been replaced by underground mining. He is now applying energy efficiency by utilizing the underground subway electric train instead of diesel solar fueled trucks as the subway train can move 300 tons of ore at one time. “It replaces diesel fuel trucks as they run on electricity and monitored by remote control. To think of it the discontinuation of trucks would eliminate 80 thousand tons of CO2 per truck,” he said

We are now using electric power generated by a dual fuel based electric power plant using 20% biodiesel (B20) and B30 which is more environmental friendly in addition to gas. “This PLTMG is a dual electric power and gas plant that generates a capacity of 130 MW,” he said. Tony added he is also pursuing efforts to recycle used fuel to help the government in battling climate change.

"The recycled fuel will be used as fuel for our drying plant in port site in the lowlands and in our lime processing plant at the Grasberg,” he said. “We at Freeport are continuously searching for alternatives to make sure our operational activities are taking full consideration with our efforts to prevent climate change. PT Freeport Indonesia’s target for next year is to make sure its underground operations are running on 100% capacity from currently 90%. By starting operations in the underground Freeport estimates a gold production of 1.5 million ounces and a copper production of 1.5 billion pounds in 2022. This means most likely higher production outputs compared to this year’s. By end of 2021 Freeport anticipates an estimated gold production output of 1.3 million ounces and nearly 1.2 billion pounds of copper.
