10 Clubs Attend Freeport Grassroots Tournament 2024 in Jayapura

Jayapura, 25 June 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is holding the Freeport Grassroots Tournament (FGT) at the Lukas Enembe Training Field in Jayapura, on Monday & Tuesday (24 & 25 June) in conjunction with All Indonesia Football Union PSSI. This event is participated by 10 clubs, or specifically football schools (SSB) in Jayapura Regency. 

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir is paying personal attention to this tournament. “The Freeport Grassroots Tournament is an excellent initiative as it affords youths the chance to play football with more excitement and pleasure.”  

Erick said PT Freeport Indonesia’s support enables this event to be well conducted and to yield positive impacts. “As such our football at the grassroots level will be able to improve immensely,” he said.  

PTFI Director and Executive Vice President for Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma said the Freeport Grassroots Tournament is by way of PT Freeport Indonesia support in conjunction with PSSI (All Indonesia Football Union) for early age development of football in Indonesia.   

“The goal of this tournament is to provide opportunities to showcase the players’ skills and for youths to begin collecting experience in competitions towards developing their talents and interest in football,” he said.    

Claus voiced the hope that this event will serve to open up new horizons for Papuan youths to view football as an ambition to achieve and to aspire to become future professional footballers. The youths are expected to play football while competing zestfully and joyously. More importantly, through this tournament the youths will learn the true meaning of sportsmanship, fair play, and mutual respect thar are the most vital aspects of character building towards producing excellent football players.  

150 children in the 10 to 12 years age bracket are participating in the FGT. This tournament was designed according to the FIFA Grassroots Tournament guideline, which primarily prioritizes participation as opposed to winning, with coaches allowed to put into action all their players, to play with zest and joy in a game.    

Other than in Jayapura, an FGT event will also be held in Gresik, East Java on this coming 26— 27 June. Participants will receive footballs that will be symbolically presented by PTFI Senior Vice President for Community Development Nathan Kum and President of the Papua Chapter of PSSI, Benhur Tommy Mano.
