28 June 2024

Gresik, 28 June 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia in collaboration with All Indonesia Football Union PSSI is again holding a football tournament for early age players, the Freeport Grassroots Tournament (FGT) on 27-28 June 2024 at the Banjarsari Football Field in Gresik, with 10 SSB clubs participating. The FGT in Gresik is the second such tournament to be held, following the previous one that took place in Jayapura.

The Freeport Grassroots Tournament embodies full support from PT Freeport Indonesia and PSSI for development of football from an early age, in Indonesia. This tournament is expected to provide a vehicle for young Indonesian talent to demonstrate their performance and at the same time afford opportunity to garner experience in the course of their endeavoring to achieve their ambition to become professional football players.

The Chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir, appreciates the hosting of the tournament, which is held in various regions. “If this children’s football tournament can be held in many regions, then there will be more opportunities for children from other areas to play football in a more exciting and enjoyable way. The hope is that if things go well at the grassroots level, it will have a positive impact on our football sector because many children are already involved at the grassroots.”

Katri Krisnati, Vice President for Corporate Communications at PTFI, congratulated all participants in the Freeport Grassroots Tournament in Gresik. “You are all champions because you have all worked hard and fought. This is also a form of effort for Indonesia, dear children,” she said.

Katri also expressed her gratitude to PSSI for the excellent cooperation, both for national team matches and other activities, including the Grassroots Tournament aimed at children who want to become professional football players.

“So you kids must stay enthusiastic because everything requires effort,” she said.

Katri added that participating in various tournaments is very important for children to develop their character, mentality, and psychological well-being. Katri voiced the hope that through this tournament children will learn the true meaning of sportsmanship, fair play, and mutual respect as the most important part of their character building towards becoming excellent football players.

150 children in the 10 to 12 years age bracket are participating in the FGT. This tournament designed according to the FIFA Grassroots Tournament guideline underscores participation as opposed to merely setting out to win, and coaches are enabled to put all their players in the game without concern over the outcome of a game, thus allowing the children to play with enjoyment.

At the closing of the FGT, football shoes are distributed to all tournament participants. PT Freeport Indonesia and PSSI worked together to provide assistance in the form of provision of football shoes for children in SSBs in the vicinity of Gresik City, with symbolic presentation of the shoes conducted by VP for Corporate Communications Katri Krisnati and PSSI Representative Ratu Tisha.
