10 Papuan Children Participate in Camp Broadway Indonesia, Perform Shrek the Musical

Jakarta, 30 June 2024 – 10 students from the Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) boarding school performed in the Broadway Mainstage Finale Showcase 2024 organized by Camp Broadway Indonesia (CBI), at the Teater Salihara theater in South Jakarta, on Saturday (29/6). They had been attending a Summer Camp 2024 workshop with 20 other participants from various strata of society, from 24 June through 28 June in Jakarta.

PTFI Vice President of Corporate Communications Katri Krisnati says PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) provided assistance to 10 children from SATP, in commitment to contributing to the development and advancement of young generations of Papuans, in particular in the area of education. Freeport highly supports character development and personal development towards building self-confidence and honing the skills and talents of every individual, and as such was assisting participation of SD SATP Timika elementary school students in this event.

"We watched the Broadway show performed by the SATP Timika children with utmost pride and admiration; they had only rehearsed for five days. They successfully adapted, they memorized the show’s songs and actions, to be sure with support from the Camp Broadway Indonesia team, to bring about a spectacular performance,” Katri said.

Camp Broadway Indonesia Artistic Director Adit Marciano conveyed his pride in the SATP students participating in the Broadway Mainstage Finale Showcase 2024. “This year we are proud and honored to have 10 beloved children from Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua Timika joining us in the Camp. I hope this valuable experience will serve to inspire and light the hearts of many more young people in Indonesia,” Adit said.

Camp Broadway Indonesia, which holds a license from Broadway New York organized the Mainstage Jakarta Summer Camp 2024, a six-day summer camp program placing emphasis on the importance of the song, acting and dancing ensemble as the mainstay of a Broadway show. For six days, the children from SATP Timika and other participants adhered to a routine of rigorous coaching in order to master the songs and scenes in the Broadway Shrek Jr show.

This year, Kristine Bendul who is a stage director and choreographer from Broadway, New York took part in the Mainstage Jakarta Summer Camp 2024 program, which also featured notable national artistes such as actor Robertus Darren Radyan in the leading role of Shrek, actress Ajeng Sharfina Adiwidya in the leading role of Fiona, Bernice Nikki as vocal director, and Wishnu Dewanta as music director with his orchestra, the Wishnu Dewanta Orchestra performing.

“Camp Broadway Indonesia is truly proud to be able to carry out this program adapted from the excellent Camp Broadway New York – Mainstage program. The expectation is for this activity to motivate young Indonesians to continue creating and achieving accomplishments,” Adit said.

SATP is a boarding school established by PTFI through the Amungme and Kamoro community Empowerment Foundation YPMAK, which manages the PTFI partnership fund for community development. This school, which in this year has 1,116 students enrolled is run by the educational foundation Yayasan Pendidikan Lokon (YPL). The students are comprised of 834 in the elementary school level, and 282 in the middle school level.
