04 October 2022

A total of 60 students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), or Gajah Mada University received scholarships from PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). As many as 50 students received scholarships for one semester of five million Rupiah, while 10 outstanding students from Papua received tuition until graduation.

Providing these scholarships represents a form of cooperation in terms of providing education and research funding from PT Freeport Indonesia to Gajah Mada University, as embedded in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on Tuesday (10/4). The awarding of these scholarships coincided with the Scientific Oration of the Minister of Investment/Head of Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal (BKPM), at the Grha Sabdha Pramana Gajah Mada University.

Prof. Ova Emilia admitted that she, as the leadership of Gadjah Mada University, was delighted and welcomed the space and precious momentum of cooperation between the Gajah Mada University and Freeport.

“We hope that the implementation of this collaboration will proceed accordingly and provide an enhanced impact on the broader future of education, particularly in terms of fulfilling and strengthening the quality of ‘Tri Dharma’ (Three Obligations) and the future work of Gadjah Mada University,” thus stated Prof Ova in her remarks.

In addition to education funding, Freeport Indonesia also provided research funds within the framework of the ‘Sahabat UGM’ program worth Rp.1.5 billion. According to the Dean, the signing of the MoU between Gajah Mada University and Freeport Indonesia represents a form of determination to promote the cooperation of the ‘Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi’ (Higher Education) implementation based on the principle or respect towards respective independence and benefit of both parties.

Within the landscape of opportunities and challenges ahead it is imperative that connectivity and cooperation with the various stakeholders is to be intensified. Mutual beneficial cooperation, according to the Dean of Gadjah Mada University, enables providing for greater opportunities for research funding, services, and other productive work on-campus.

“It goes without saying that efforts to develop work productivity and on-campus work require solid support, including in the funding sector. On the other hand, the cooperation aspect between campus and the industrial sector will certainly allow for the start of diverse opportunities and openings and a host of new innovative ideas,” she explained.

Chairman of the Board, who is also the CEO of Freeport-Mc-MoRan, Richard Adkerson delivered a presentation regarding the history of Freeport and the relationship established with the Indonesian government. By means of a number of activities and cooperation initiations, he said, Freeport pursues to contribute to Indonesia, including in the field of education.
