7 Real Contributions Made by Freeport Indonesia for Papua Throughout 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper, gold, and silver mining company that has been operating in Papua for more than 50 years. Moreover, PT Freeport Indonesia has been making real contributions to encourage the development and welfare of Papuans living in its operating area. 

PT Freeport Indonesia’s mining operation can be described as sustainable if all aspects are balanced, including economic, environmental, and social aspects.  Throughout 2021, PT Freeport Indonesia demonstrated such contribution for Papuans. Building two suspension bridges in Hoya, Mimika was one way PT Freeport Indonesia displayed earnestness in conducting sustainable mining. The following are contributions made by PT Freeport Indonesia for Papuans in 2021.

1. Freeport support for hydroponic cultivation

A member of  the indigenous Amungme tribe, Octo Magai succeeded in developing a hydroponic garden at SP3, in the village of Desa Karang Senang, Kuala Kencana District, Mimika. The vegetables Octo harvested from his hydroponic garden are now supplied to PT Freeport Indonesia through PT Makanan Sari Utama. Hydroponic cultivation offers opportunities for Papuans as it easy to manage. Octo came up with the idea of starting this business when he realized that no one was supplying fresh vegetables to  PT Freeport Indonesia. In addition to running his hydroponic garden, Octo is the Industrial General Superintendent at PT Freeport Indonesia. He says he is grateful to PT Freeport Indonesia for supporting his business, and he now mentors eight farming groups across several locations. 

2. Construction of two suspension bridges 

In 2015, PT Freeport Indonesia contributed to the construction of two suspension bridges in Hoya District, Mimika. Construction of the two suspension bridges is now completed and the bridges have been handed over to the Hoya administration towards facilitating access for residents.  The two bridges connect the villages of  Desa Jinoni and Desa Kulamaogom over a distance of 140 meters, and the villages of Desa Dalmaogom and Desa Mamotoga over a distance of 150 meters. In contributing to development in Papua, in particular near its operating area, PT Freeport Indonesia provides sustainable assistance towards balancing various aspects in support of the people and the region. According to PT Freeport Indonesia, the cost of construction of the two suspension bridges amounted to approximately Rp 8 billion. 

3. PTFI assisted the Mimika government to plant 1000 trees  

In June, PT Freeport Indonesia together with the Mimika government commemorated World Environmental Day by planting 1000 trees. Throughout the month of June, they also conducted routine cleanup sessions in the city. The activity was aimed at raising residents’ awareness of, and concern for the environment. This aligns with  PT Freeport Indonesia’s commitment to consistently conduct a sustainable mining operation that contributes positively to the environment. This joint effort with the Mimika regency government was but one step among many to maintain a clean Mimika ahead of the 20 national games PON and the National Church Choir Festival held in Papua. 

4. PTFI donated three health clinics to the Mimika government 

Towards providing access to healthcare for the communities in its operating area, PT Freeport Indonesia donated three health clinics to the Mimika government. According to a statement made by the local Health Office, the three clinics granted are located in   SP 9, SP 12, and Mapurujaya, respectively. Although they have been handed over to the Mimika government, PT Freeport Indonesia will continue to provide operational assistance and all other facilities the clinics  may lack. Indeed, the clinics will continue to be operated as usual, including offering healthcare services for  PT Freeport Indonesia employees.

5. PTFI undertakes repair of roads damaged by landslides 

As a result of landslides caused by torrential rains last February, several access roads were damaged in the village of Desa Banti. PT Freeport Indonesia was moved to offer assistance to repair the access roads, as well as building embankments and ditches along the route connecting the villages of  Desa Tagabukarat and Desa Tagabera. As cited by ANTARA, PT Freeport Indonesia conducted the road construction repairs for 21 days, with assistance from various entities in Timika. This work was part of  PT Freeport Indonesia commitment to fulfill the economic aspect of development for communities near its operating area. When roads are in disrepair, community mobility is impaired, and their economy suffers. With PT Freeport Indonesia lending a helping hand, Desa Banti is gradually developing, although repairs are conducted by stages. 

6. PTFI support for the 20th National Games (PON) through renovation of  MSC

In support of ensuring the success of the 20th National Games PON in Mimika, PT conducted a total renovation of Mimika Sport Complex (MSC). The work was completed over a full month at a cost of Rp 6 billion. 

The international-standard stadium was closed for an entire month to expedite the renovation work performed by PT Freeport Indonesia. The renovation work focused on reinforcing walls, cleanups, and repairs on public facilities and facilities for athletes, as well as making adjustments to access gates for the PON. PT Freeport Indonesia was also reported to have channeled Rp 462 billion to build MSC and its accompanying facilities. Among others a carpet imported directly from Germany was installed for the running track.

7. PTFI brought in 11,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine for first stage vaccinations 

In June, PT Freeport Indonesia brought in 11,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine for first stage vaccinations for thousands of employees and their families in Mimika. The vaccinations were performed by stages according to the availability of the Sinopharm vaccine. PT Freeport Indonesia targeted vaccination for all employees and their families to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In collaboration with healthcare agencies, PT Freeport Indonesia is committed to maintaining the health of all employees and their families in the operating area in the current times of this pandemic. From the outset, PT Freeport Indonesia submitted a request for 75,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine to President Joko Widodo. Vaccinations were scheduled to be completed by October. Towards achieving a sustainable mining operation. PT Freeport Indonsia has made real contributions for the people of Papua throughout 2021. Through the commitment it has made, PT Freeport Indonesia will continue to meet the needs of Papuan communities in its operating area in all aspects.
